TTC to use PRESTO fare cards by 2015

During meetings last Wednesday, November 23, both the Toronto Transit Commission and the Metrolinx board of directors approved a framework and general principles for the TTC implementing the PRESTO fare-collection system. As a result, the TTC and Metrolinx will continue to negotiate over the next few months to develop an operating contract for a 10-year period that will support the TTC’s business requirements. The Commission further directed TTC staff to report back to the board with the details of these negotiations before finalizing the agreement.

The transit commissioners also stipulated that, after fully implementing PRESTO, the TTC’s operating cost for collecting fares is lower than the current level.

An “open payment system” — where passengers can pay fares on transit vehicles or at stations by tapping their credit or debit cards onto a card reader continues to intrigue the transit commission. The commissioners also moved a motion directing TTC staff to encourage Metrolinx to partner with ACS Transport Solutions Inc. so that PRESTO can evolve to include open payment systems effectively and seamlessly throughout the Greater Toronto Area, Hamilton and Ottawa.

Metrolinx hopes to have the PRESTO system fully operating at the TTC before the Pan American /Parapan American Games in summer 2015.
