Oakville Transit, YRT raise fares, January 1, 2012

Later this week, the Toronto Transit Commissioners meet to determine, among other issues, whether to increase TTC fares by ten or fifteen cents.

Meanwhile, elsewhere in the Greater Toronto Area, two local transit systems have already decided to increase the price of their services. That means you’ll be paying more to ride the bus in Oakville and York Region, starting New Year’s Day, Sunday, January 1, 2012.

Oakville

The cost of adult cash fares increases by 25 cents to $3.25 that day.

Oakville Transit is not raising the cost of tickets and passes or for cash fares in other categories.

York Region

York Regional Council recently approved increasing fares for York Region Transit and Viva services.

The cost to buy adult tickets jumps from $3.25 to $3.50 for traveling in a single zone, or from $4.25 to $4.50 for traveling in two zones.

This is the first time since 2009 that YRT / Viva have raised fares. The increase affects all cash fares, tickets and passes, except for the GTA Weekly Pass. Senior ticket and pass prices remain below the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) average and discounted monthly passes and tickets continue to be an economical option for all riders.

YRT is also aligning MobilityPlus fares with fares for conventional transit Sunday, January 1, allowing seniors and students to benefit from discounted ticket and pass rates.

When it approved increasing YRT /Viva fares, Regional council considered many factors, including higher contractor and fuel rates, consistency with other GTA transit systems and cost recovery. The 7.81 per cent increase will help raise YRT / Viva’s cost recovery ratio to nearly 40 per cent, creating a more equitable cost balance between transit rider and taxpayer.
