Guelph City Council to approve lower Guelph Transit fares
for passengers connecting with GO trains

The Guelph Mercury reports that members of the City of Guelph’s operations and transit committee recently approved a “fare integration agreement” with Metrolinx and GO Transit to encourage Guelph passengers to use GO trains. Guelph City Council will likely approve the plan during its meeting this Monday, December 19.

Guelph Transit riders with valid GO passes will pay just $18 for a monthly pass, which will get them a sticker to place on a valid GO monthly pass. GO will then reimburse Guelph Transit for the difference — $54 — between that and the cost of a regular monthly bus pass.

Holders of any other type of GO fare media, including the monthly pass, will pay 60 cents for a Guelph Transit ride to or from the downtown station. GO will then repay the city $1.70 for each such pass to cover the regular $2.30 cost of a regular bus trip.

The first GO train arrives in Guelph Monday, December 19. If council approves the agreement, the “co-fare” plan will come into effect Tuesday, January 3, 2012.
