Part 1 -- Less service to colleges and universities,
starting this week



Exams are ending and most classes are over until the new year, so many area transit agencies — especially GO Transit — decrease services to colleges and universities for the holidays. Tomorrow, Wednesday, December 21, is the last day this year that buses operate along many of the routes that serve passengers traveling to and from post-secondary institutions. Most service resumes after New Year’s Day.


This post appears in two parts.

This part describes how transit agencies are decreasing services to: Brock University, Centennial College’s Ashtonbee, Ellesmere and Progress Campuses, Durham College’s Oshawa Campus, Conestoga College’s Doon, Cambridge and Waterloo Campuses, Fleming College’s Sutherland Campus, Humber College’s Lakeshore and North Campuses, McMaster University, Niagara College’s Glendale and Welland Campuses, Redeemer University College, Sheridan College’s Trafalgar Campus, Trent University’s Symons Campus and the University of Guelph.

Part 2 describes how transit agencies are decreasing services to: the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT), the University of Toronto’s Mississauga and Scarborough Campuses, the University of Waterloo, Wilfrid Laurier University and York University’s Keele Campuses.

Starting Wednesday, December 21, buses operate every 30 minutes, instead of every 15 minutes, Monday-to-Friday daytime. Buses leave the Downtown St. Catharines Terminal at 15 and 45 minutes past the hour.

During the holidays, the SCTC interlines buses operating along this route with buses operating along the 4 Oakdale - Pen - Brock route.

Regular service resumes and interlining ends on Monday, January 9, 2012.

21 Confederation - Brock

Starting Wednesday, December 21, buses resume their regular schedules and no longer operate later Monday-to-Friday evening trips from the Brock Tower Terminal at 11:06 p.m. and Saturday evening trips from 6:06 until 11:06 p.m.

4 Oakdale - Pen - Brock

Starting Wednesday, December 21, the SCTC interlines buses operating along the route with buses operating along the 16 Brock - Glenridge route.

Interlining ends and regular service resumes Monday, January 9, 2012.

Tuesday, December 20 is the last day this year that the SCTC operates buses along the route.

Starting Monday, January 2, 2011, it operates buses Monday-to-Friday evenings only. Regular, all-day service resumes Saturday, January 7, 2011.

West of the University of Toronto’s Scarborough Campus, buses operate every 11 minutes, instead of every 7½ minutes during morning rush hours. East of U of T Scarborough, buses operate every 11 minutes, instead of every 15 minutes.

West of U of T, buses operate every 10 minutes, instead of every 6 minutes, during afternoon rush hours. East of U of T, buses operate every 10 minutes, instead of every 12 minutes.

Since fewer passengers are traveling to and from the college, starting Monday, December 19, the TTC is operating two fewer buses along the local / express branch of the route Mondays to Fridays during rush hours. Buses operate every 24 minutes, instead of every 15 minutes.

Since fewer passengers are traveling to and from the college, starting Monday, December 19, the TTC is operating two fewer buses along the route Monday-to-Friday midday.

South of Progress Avenue, buses operate every 7&frac2; minutes, instead of every 6½ minutes, from about 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Between Passmore and Progress Avenues, buses operate every 15 minutes, instead of every 13 minutes. North of Passmore Avenue, buses operate every 30 minutes, instead of every 26 minutes.

134 Progress

Since fewer passengers are traveling to and from the college, starting Monday, December 19, the TTC operates two fewer buses along the route Mondays to Fridays during morning rush hours and one less bus during afternoon rush hours.

West of Centennial College, buses operate every 5 minutes 43 seconds, instead of every 4 minutes, during morning rush hours. They operate every 5 minutes 43 seconds, instead of every 4 minutes 37 seconds during afternoon rush hours. North and east of Centennial, buses continue to operate every 20 minutes Mondays to Fridays before 7 p.m.

Mondays to Fridays, December 19, 20, 21, 22 and 23 and 27, 28, 29 and 30, the southbound buses that currently start their trips in the Conestoga Mall Terminal at 7:30, 8 and 8:30 a.m. Mondays to Fridays, start, instead, at University Avenue and King Street North at 7:55, 8:25 and 8:55 a.m., then serve all other stops along the route at the same time as they do currently. GRT does not operate the southbound buses that currently leave Conestoga Mall at 9 and 9:35 a.m.

The northbound buses that currently end their trips in the Conestoga Mall Terminal at 3:53, 4:23, 4:53, 5:23 and 5:53 p.m. Mondays to Fridays, instead, end their trips at University Avenue and King Street North at 3:23, 3:53, 4:23, 4:53 and 5:23 p.m.

Regular service resumes Monday, January 2, 2012.

Decreasing service along this route also affects service for passengers traveling to and from the the University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University.

Arthurs Common on York University’s Keele Campus at 8:15 and 9:15 a.m. Mondays to Fridays. (The buses arrive at Durham College / UOIT 9:14 and 10:10 a.m. and at the Downtown Oshawa Terminal at 9:30 and 10:15 a.m.)

Regular Monday-to-Friday service resumes Tuesday, January 3, 2012.

GO is not operating buses along the route Christmas, Sunday, December 25 or New Year’s Day, Sunday, January 1, 2012.

Since fewer passengers are traveling to and from the college, starting Monday, December 19, the TTC is operating two fewer buses along the route Mondays to Fridays before 7 p.m.

Buses operate along the entire route every 6� minutes, instead of every 5� minutes, during morning rush hours. They operate every 12 minutes, instead of every 9 minutes, from about 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. They operate every 7 minutes, instead of every 6 minutes 15 seconds, during afternoon rush hours.

Friday, December 16 was the last day this year that the TTC operates buses along the 191A short-turn branch between Humber College’s North Campus and Kipling Station. The southbound buses that usually start their trips at Humber College at 9:26, 9:46, 10:06 and 10:26 a.m. don’t operate during the holidays. The northbound buses that usually leave Kipling Station at 8:50, 9:10, 9:30, 9:50, 10:10 and 10:30 a.m., ending their trips at Humber, don’t operate during the holidays.

Since fewer passengers are traveling to and from the college, starting Monday, December 19, the TTC is operating three fewer buses along the express branch of the route Mondays to Fridays during rush hours. Buses operate every 21 minutes, instead of every 12 minutes.

McMaster University


Both GO Transit and the Hamilton Street Railway are decreasing service to and from the university during the holidays.

It was also the last day this year that GO operates the eastbound buses leaving “Mac” at 2:25, 4, 4:20, 5:05, 5:25, 6:25 and 7:10 p.m. Mondays to Fridays. (The buses end their trips in Square One terminal at 3:05, 4:40, 5, 5:45, 6:05, 7:05 and 7:50 p.m.)

It was also the last day that GO operates the westbound buses leaving Square One at 7:27, 7:35, 8:05 and 8:35 a.m. Mondays to Fridays. (The buses end their trips on campus at 8:10, 8:18, 8:48 and 9:18 a.m.)

(The buses end their trips in the Cooksville GO Station bus terminal at 2:40, 4:10, 5:10 and 6:15 p.m.)

Regular Friday-only service resumes Friday, January 6, 2012.

Transit agencies often interline buses operating along two or more routes that share a common terminal to save resources — vehicles and drivers. For example, a southbound bus operating along the St. Catharines Transit Commission’s 4 Oakdale - Pen - Brock route arrives at the Brock Tower Terminal, then continues northward along the 16 Brock - Glenridge route. A southbound bus operating along the 16 Brock - Glenridge route arrives at Brock, then continues along the 4 Oakdale - Pen - Brock route.
