Part 2 -- Less service to colleges and universities,
starting this week



Exams are ending and most classes are over until the new year, so many area transit agencies — especially GO Transit — decrease services to colleges and universities for the holidays. Tomorrow, Wednesday, December 21, is the last day this year that buses operate along many of the routes that serve passengers traveling to and from post-secondary institutions. Most service resumes after New Year’s Day.


This post appears in two parts.

This part describes how transit agencies are decreasing services to: the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT), the University of Toronto’s Mississauga and Scarborough Campuses, the University of Waterloo, Wilfrid Laurier University and York University’s Keele Campus.

Wednesday, December 21 is the last day this year that GO operates the eastbound buses that leave the Harry W. Arthurs Common on York University’s Keele Campus at 8:15 and 9:15 a.m. Mondays to Fridays. (The buses arrive at Durham College / UOIT 9:14 and 10:10 a.m. and at the Downtown Oshawa Terminal at 9:30 and 10:15 a.m.)

Regular Monday-to-Friday service resumes Tuesday, January 3, 2012.

Since fewer passengers are traveling to and from the college, starting Monday, December 19, the TTC is operating two fewer buses along the route Mondays to Fridays during rush hours.

West of the University of Toronto’s Scarborough Campus, buses operate every 11 minutes, instead of every 7½ minutes during morning rush hours. East of U of T Scarborough, buses operate every 11 minutes, instead of every 15 minutes.

West of U of T, buses operate every 10 minutes, instead of every 6 minutes, during afternoon rush hours. East of U of T, buses operate every 10 minutes, instead of every 12 minutes.

Holiday service ends and regular service resumes Monday, January 9, 2012.

Since fewer passengers are traveling to and from the college, starting Monday, December 19, the TTC is operating two fewer buses along the local / express branch of the route Mondays to Fridays during rush hours. Buses operate every 24 minutes, instead of every 15 minutes.

It’s also the last day this year that GO operates the westbound bus that leaves Square One at 11:40 a.m. Fridays. (The bus arrives at the Davis Centre at 1:15 p.m.)

GO is operating all other buses that it has scheduled along this branch of the route seven days a week during the holidays.

Mondays to Fridays, December 19, 20, 21, 22 and 23 and 27, 28, 29 and 30, GRT isn’t operating the short-turn northbound bus that usually leaves Westmount and Highland Roads West at 7:54 a.m. Mondays to Fridays. (The bus ends its trip at University Avenue West and Seagram Drive beside the University of Waterloo Campus.)

During the holidays, GRT is not operating the northbound bus that usually leaves Fairview Park Terminal at 8:45 a.m., ending its trip on University Avenue at King Street North at 9:29 a.m.

Regular service resumes Monday, January 2, 2012.

Decreasing the frequency along the route also affects service to and from Conestoga College’s Waterloo Campus.

201 iXpress

Mondays to Fridays, December 19, 20, 21, 22 and 23 and 27, 28, 29 and 30, GRT isn’t operating the southbound buses that usually leave Laurier iXpress station (University Avenue West across from Hazel Street) at 9:15 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. Mondays to Fridays. (The buses usually arrive at the Fairview Park Terminal at 9:48 a.m. and 2:48 p.m.)

It also isn’t operating the northbound buses that usually leave Fairview at 9, 9:30 and 10 a.m. (The buses usually arrive at Laurier at 9:33, 10:03 and 10:33 a.m.). It’s also canceling the special northbound buses that leave Fischer - Hallman Road and Erb Street West at 7:55, 8:25, 8:55 and 9:25 a.m. Mondays to Fridays. (The buses usually end their trips at the William G. Davis Computer Sciences Centre on the University of Waterloo Campus.)

Regular service resumes Monday, January 2, 2012.

9 Lakeshore

Mondays to Fridays, December 19, 20, 21, 22 and 23 and 27, 28, 29 and 30, GRT is decreasing the rush-hour frequency from every 15 minutes to every 30 minutes. Buses leave Conestoga Mall about every 30 minutes all day, starting at 5:40 a.m. Buses leave the William G. Davis Computer Sciences Centre on the University of Waterloo campus about every 30 minutes all day, starting at 6:01 a.m.

Regular service resumes Monday, January 2, 2012.

29 Keats Way

Monday to Friday, December 19, 20, 21, 22 and 23, GRT isn’t operating the eastbound buses leaving Keats Way and Fischer - Hallman Road North at 7:48, 7:57 and 11:40 a.m. and 12:07 p.m. Mondays to Fridays. (The buses arrive at University Avenue West across from Hazel Street at 8, 8:09 and 11:52 a.m. and 12:19 p.m.)

It also doesn’t operate the eastbound buses that leave University Avenue West and Hazel Street at 1:30 and 2 p.m. (The buses end their trips on Keats Way and Fischer - Hallman Road North at 1:42 and 2:12 p.m.)

Tuesday to Friday, December 27, 28, 29 and 30, GRT isn’t operating any Monday-to-Friday short-turn eastbound buses, providing ten-minute frequent service along the route between Keats Way at Fischer - Hallman Road North and University Avenue West across from Hazel Street.

Instead, buses operate along the entire route about every 30 minutes all day Mondays to Fridays. Eastbound buses leave The Boardwalk from 6:45 a.m. until 11:15 p.m. Westbound buses leave University Avenue West and Hazel Street from 6:15 a.m. until 11:40 p.m.

Regular service resumes Monday, January 2, 2012.

GRT is also permanently adjusting the schedule, starting Monday, December 19.

13 Laurelwood

Mondays to Fridays, December 19, 20, 21, 22 and 23 and 27, 28, 29 and 30, GRT is decreasing the rush-hour frequency from every 15 minutes to every 30 minutes. Buses leave Erbsville Road and Laurelwood Drive, starting at 5:45 a.m. Buses leave the William G. Davis Computer Centre on the University of Waterloo campus every 30 minutes, starting at 6:10 a.m.

Regular service resumes Monday, January 2, 2012.

7E Mainline via Columbia

Mondays to Fridays, December 19, 20, 21, 22 and 23 and 27, 28, 29 and 30, GRT isn’t operating the northbound buses that usually leave the Charles Street Terminal at 6:50, 7:20, 7:50, 8:20, 8:50 and 9:34 p.m. Mondays to Fridays. (The buses usually arrive at the William G. Davis Computer Sciences Centre on the University of Waterloo campus at 7:14, 7:44, 8:14, 8:44, 9:14 and 9:57 p.m.)

Regular service resumes Monday, January 2, 2012.

7D Mainline via University

Mondays to Fridays, December 19, 20, 21, 22 and 23 and 26, 27, 28, 29 and 30, GRT isn’t operating the northbound buses that usually leave the Charles Street Terminal at 8 and 8:30 a.m. Mondays to Fridays. (The buses usually arrive at the Ring Road and Columbia West on the University of Waterloo campus at 8:25 and 8:55 a.m.)

It’s also not operating the southbound buses that leave the William G. Davis Computer Sciences Centre on campus at 6:50, 7:20, 7:50, 8:20, 9:24 and 9:58 p.m. Mondays to Saturdays. (The buses usually arrive in the Charles Street Terminal at 7:11, 7:41, 8:11, 8:41, 9:43 and 10:17 p.m.)

Regular service resumes Monday, January 2, 2012.


York University Keele Campus


GO Transit and the TTC are decreasing service to and from the university during the holidays.

Buses operate every 15 minutes, instead of every 11½ minutes during morning rush hours. They operate every 14 minutes 15 seconds, instead of every 11 minutes, during afternoon rush hours.

Since fewer passengers are traveling to and from the college, starting Monday, December 19, the TTC operates one less bus along local branches of the route Mondays to Fridays before 3 p.m.

East of York University, buses operate every 3 minutes 45 seconds, instead of every 3 minutes 40 seconds, during morning rush hours. They operate every 4 minutes, instead of every 6 minutes, from about 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.

West of York, buses operate every 7½ minutes, instead of every 7 minutes 10 seconds, during morning rush hours. They continue to operate every 12 minutes from about 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Holiday service ends and regular service resumes Monday, January 9, 2012.

196 York University rocket

Since fewer passengers are traveling to and from the college, starting Monday, December 20, the TTC is operating fewer buses along the route Mondays to Fridays before 10 p.m.

North and west of Downsview Station, buses operate every 4½ minutes, instead of every 2 minutes during morning rush hours. They operate every 5½ minutes, instead of every 2 minutes from 9 a.m. until about 3 p.m. They operate every 5 minutes, instead of every 2 minutes 20 seconds during afternoon rush hours. And, they operate every 7½ minutes, instead of every 3 minutes 40 seconds, from about 7 until 10 p.m.
