YRT workers picket southwest division operations centre,
delaying bus services today, December 20

Members of the Amalgamated Transit’s Local 1587 and Local 113 have set up picket lines at York Region Transit’s southwest service operations centre again today, Tuesday, December 20.

The employees are on strike against three private companies that supply transit services to much of York Region — First Canada, Miller Transport and York BRT Services. Buses that operate out of the southwest division facility are among the few transit services that YRT is still able to provide during this labour disruption.

Expect delays on all remaining YRT buses today, including buses operating along the 3 Thornhill - York U, 4 Major Mackenzie, 7 Martin Grove, 12 Pine Valley, 20 Jane - Concord, 23 Thornhill Woods, 77 Highway 7 / Centre, 91 Bayview and 99 Yonge. The picketers may also delay TTC buses operating along the 107 Keele North route.

Starting at 5:30 a.m. today, Region of York staff expect picketers to delay each YRT bus exiting the operations centre by several minutes, likely resulting in longer delays throughout the morning, as the strikers delay more and more drivers and their vehicles.

Sixty per cent of YRT and Viva services have been unavailable since Monday, October 24, due to a strike by ATU Locals 1587 and 113 against three of the four private suppliers that York Region has contracted to operate transit service.

Forty per cent of service remains available to passengers during the dispute: all YRT buses operating out of the southwest division and all TTC buses serving routes in Markham and Vaughan.
