Guelph Transit launched new route network, January 1

Following a study by external consultants and extensive consultation with passengers, politicians and other Guelphites, Guelph Transit scrapped all of its old routes and introduced a completely new route network Sunday, January 1.

Along with new routes, Guelph Transit now offers 15-minute service along regular routes Mondays to Fridays during rush hours and 30-minute service at all other times of the week. This increases the frequency of GT’s rush-hour service, but decreases its frequency Mondays to Fridays midday — from about 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. At all other times of the week, Guelph Transit offers the same level of service as it did before the change.

The new schedules also increase service along the key Norfolk Street / Gordon Street north-south corridor, with buses operating along the two streets between Macdonell Street and the University of Guelph every 7 to 8 minutes during rush hours and every 15 minutes at all other times of the week.

Later this year — possibly in May — Guelph Transit will open a new downtown transit terminal beside the Guelph Central GO / VIA Station, and it will shift all routes to start and end trips there, rather than at St. George’s Square.

Starting Sunday, GT buses operate along regular routes seven days a week. Although most buses continue to start and end their trips at St. George’s Square, the new network also establishes another network focal point at the University Centre Terminal on the University of Guelph campus. Many buses that start and end their trips at the university don’t operate to and from downtown Guelph.

Buses operating along two circular perimeter routes connect the outer edges of the city with both downtown Guelph and the university and supply the frequent service along Gordon and Norfolk Streets.

GT continues to interline buses at St. George’s Square — and also at the University Centre Terminal.

The study recommended decreasing service in two industrial areas where passengers ride buses mainly to and from work when the shifts change in factories. Yesterday, GO replaced regular bus service to these areas with two industrial routes. Buses operate along the industrial routes seven days a week, but only at certain times of the day.

Starting today, Tuesday, January 3, GT introduces new shuttle bus service from four parking areas on the edge of the city to the Guelph Centre GO Station. The buses carry passengers who want to travel by train to the station before the first train of the day leaves Guelph.

GT is also revamping its community bus service, starting today. With one exception, it’s leaving the extra services to and from the University of Guelph alone. Buses continue to operate along all university special routes, including late-night and Sunday special service, except the former 55 College / University route.

Transit agencies often interline buses operating along two or more routes with a common terminal to save resources — reducing the number of drivers and vehicles to operate service along the routes separately. For example, an inbound bus operating along the 10 Imperial route operates outbound along the 14 Grange route after leaving St. George’s Square.
