Davis Drive rapidway construction closes lanes, June 5, 6

Tomorrow, Tuesday, June 5 and Wednesday, June 6, Metrolinx and York Region crews continue the project to build a rapidway — bus-only lanes in the centre of the roadway — along Davis Drive in Newmarket.

This week the work blocks traffic lanes in two locations.

From 7 a.m. until 2 p.m. tomorrow, Tuesday, June 5, they’ll block the eastbound curb lane and the right-turn lane into the Southlake Regional Health Centre, although the hospital entrance remains open.

They’re finishing the first phase of the project to build a retaining wall in front of the hospital by paving a small area inside the entrance.

From 9:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. Wednesday, June 6, they’ll temporarily close the eastbound lane on Davis Drive, just west of Roxborough Road. They’ll also section off twelve parking spaces at the north end of the parking lot to use as a work area.

To prepare for upcoming construction of another retaining wall, they’ll use hydrovac trucks — truck-mounted vacuums — to remove soil and look for buried utilities in four separate holes. They’ll need one to two hours at each location, and once they’ve finished at each site, they’ll fill each hole Expect noise around work sites from the hydrovac truck’s vacuum.

During the work, sidewalks will be open and a flag person will be on site to direct pedestrians around work areas.
