Main Street Markham construction
affects GO, TTC, YRT services (*)

Update — Wednesday, August 15, 9:46 p.m.: Construction now blocks both north- and southbound lanes of Main Street North, so the TTC is now detouring buses operating along the 102D Markham Rd route in both directions.

The Town of Markham (after July 1, the City of Markham) is starting a project to rebuild

  • Main Street Markham between Major Mackenzie Drive and Highway 407.

By the end of the project, the City hopes to

  • upgrade the water-mains, storm sewers and other service connections;
  • enhance the streetscape;
  • improve the public areas; and
  • showcase the significant residential, commercial and heritage community of Markham.

The first phase of the project started Monday, June 18 and affects the section of the road between Bullock Drive / Parkway Avenue and Highway 7. Work on this phase continues until December.

The City is breaking this phase into two main sections:

  • between Highway 7 and Robinson Street and
  • between Robinson Street and Bullock Drive.

Contractors must complete three different types of underground construction work in order:

  1. Installing a new watermain;
  2. Installing new water service connections; and
  3. Installing storm sewers and catch basins.

When work begins, the City is closing Main Street Markham to northbound traffic. Vehicles only operate southbound along one lane during construction.

Construction affects GO Transit buses operating along the 71 Stouffville / Toronto route, Toronto Transit Commission buses operating along the 102D Markham Rd route and York Region Transit buses operating along the 1 Highway 7 and 521 Markham community bus route.
