TTC adds luggage racks to buses, revises route
for Airport rocket service

The TTC has installed luggage racks across from the rear door on all buses operating along the 192 Airport rocket route. Service crews removed four seats from each of the 10 buses that the TTC dedicates to the route to accommodate the racks, which are about two metres long by ½ metre deep (about six feet long by two feet deep).

Probably not coincidentally, the TTC is also revising the route. Starting Sunday, February 17, northbound buses resume operating along Highway 427, instead of Highway 27, north of Highway 401.

The TTC previously and controversially revised the route, so that buses operated both ways via Auckland, Dundas, East Mall Crescent, the East Mall, Eglinton, Renforth and Silver Dart in September 2009, citing safety concerns about standing passengers and loose luggage. As a result, buses required at least fifteen minutes longer to run from Kipling station to the Airport. Staff did not communicate this change to transit commissioners, who only heard about this diversion after receiving complaints from members of the public. The transit commission began to assess why the change was made, and how best to reverse it.

In November that year, the TTC returned southbound buses to their regular route, but again revised the northbound route so that buses operated along Highway 27 and Dixon Road north of Highway 427, avoiding the tight curves and multiple lane changes on Highway 427, that seemed to have resulted in loose luggage difficulties.

Now, starting February 17, northbound buses start their trips in Kipling Station bus terminal, then proceed:

westward along St. Alban’s Road;
northward along Aukland Road;
westward along Dundas Street West;
northward along Highway 427; and then
northward along Airport Road to Toronto Pearson International Airport,
making stops first on Jetliner Road at Airport Road,
then at the Airport Roadway at Jetliner Road,
then at Terminal 1 (ground level), and then at Terminal 3 (arrivals level).

The buses operate express — without stopping — from Kipling Station to Pearson Airport, picking up passengers only at Dundas Street West and East Mall Crescent.

Southbound buses continue to operate along their current route.
