More Davis Drive rapidway construction starts April 15

Metrolinx and York Region contractors continue the project to build a rapidway — bus-only lanes in the centre of the roadway — along Davis Drive in Newmarket.

As part of project, they’ll be realigning Parkside Drive to meet Longford Drive. To prepare for this change and relocate underground storm pipes and drains in the area, work crews start heavy construction in the area of Parkside and Longford Drives over the next few months. During this work, they’ll shift the entrance to 200 Davis Drive from Davis to Parkside.

Starting the week of Monday, April 15, they’ll be working from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. each day in the boulevard along the front of 200 Davis Drive for about 6 to 8 weeks to:

  • fence off the necessary work area;
  • Dig a trench to expose storm pipes;
  • Lay new storm drainage pipe and install manholes; and
  • Backfill and restore the area

During this work, workers will maintain access to the 200 Davis Drive shops, but from Parkside Drive, instead of Davis Drive. Signs will be in place to direct traffic. When the work is complete, the entrance off Davis Drive will reopen. The permanent access to 200 Davis Drive will off Parkside Drive, once contractors have aligned Parkside with Longford Drive.

Once they’re finished at the site, they’ll cross Parkside Drive to continue working at 130 Davis Drive Plaza.

During the work, the contractors will block the eastbound curb lane on Davis Drive as part of the long-term traffic shift to accommodate other parts of the rapidway construction project.

If the south sidewalk is closed, the north sidewalk will remain open. Bus stops remain open.

Also next week, crews start building a retaining wall in front of 251 - 259 Davis Drive that extends west along Davis. They’ll be working from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. each day until October.

At this site, they’re

  • installing a temporary driveway to the east;
  • installing a fence around the work zone;
  • digging out the work area;
  • building the retaining wall; and then
  • backfilling and restoring the area.

During construction, the plaza entrance to 251-259 Davis Drive and all entrances to the building remain open. However, parking will not be available in the work area.

The work reduces Davis Drive traffic to one lane in each direction for the rest of the project.
