Broadview / Gerrard streetcar detours
continue this week

A serious fire last weekend at the southeast corner of Broadview Avenue and Gerrard Street East closed the intersection as fire fighters put out the flames and rescued residents. Fortunately no-one was seriously injured during the blaze.

For the rest of last week, the intersection remained closed, as Ontario Fire Marshal investigators determined the cause of the blaze, City of Toronto workers removed debris from the sidewalks and roadway and wrecking crews demolished the building.

Since last Saturday, July 13, the TTC has been diverting three streetcar routes that usually serve passengers at the intersection.

Today, Sunday, July 21, the Fire Marshall, the City and the demolition team completed their work. However, TTC streetcar service will not return to the area until the end of this week.

Demolishing the building required crews to completely dismantle streetcar overheard wires and the main power distribution cables at the intersection and eastward along Gerrard East. The complicated web of wires delivers the power necessary to operate the streetcars.

The TTC now must completely re-install these wires — a much more time-consuming and difficult task than taking the overhead system down. TTC workers will work around the clock to finish this work as soon as possible and as the work progresses, the TTC will advise the passengers more specifically when streetcar service can resume.

The intersection is a major transfer point for TTC passengers traveling on streetcars operating along the 504 King, 505 Dundas and 506 Carlton routes.

The TTC has been diverting the cars and operating shuttle buses along versions of the 504 and 506 routes to carry passengers along sections of Broadview and Gerrard East since early July 13 and the detours continue this week.

Although the TTC has not announced detour information, closing the intersection likely also affects service along the 303 Don Mills overnight bus route and the 306 Carlton overnight streetcar route.
