MiWay is raising some of its fares Monday, January 27 as it moves toward PRESTO fare cards as the prime method for passengers to pay for transit.
According to MiWay, it’s increasing fares to offset cost pressures in the 2014 transit budget and support its efforts in making transit an attractive alternative to driving personal vehicles. It says it’s doing that by investing in Mississauga’s transit network by building the Mississauga Transitway and through other projects.
MiWay is not changing its fares for buying adult monthly passes. Adults who pay their fares by cash will still drop $3.25 into the farebox and child and student fares remain the same as in previous years. In fact, the student and child categories will remain frozen at the 2009 rate for two more years.
MiWay is no longer selling adult weekly passes starting January 27. Instead, it’s encouraging passengers to buy and register PRESTO cards.
A new fare category will be available for post-secondary students who use PRESTO fare cards, aligning MiWay’s fares with other transit fares in the Greater Toronto Area and Hamilton. Post-secondary students will pay $2.25 from their PRESTO e-purse, starting January 27, but that charge will jump to $2.45, starting Thursday, May 1. MiWay says that it’s phasing in increases to post-secondary student fares so that they’ll match adult fares by 2017.
Tickets and PRESTO e-purse charges for adult passengers cost ten cents more, jumping to $2.80. Senior tickets and e-purse charges go up five cents to $1.85. You’ll pay an extra $3 — $53 in total — each month for a seniors monthly pass and an extra $30 a year — $534 in total — for an annual pass.
