Court sends man to jail
for assaulting TTC employee

On Saturday, December 21, a man boarded a TTC bus near Lawrence Avenue East and Kingston Road without paying a fare. When the driver asked him for a fare, the man spat in his face and tried to strike him with an umbrella. Emergency services personnel transported the TTC driver to hospital with minor injuries.

Last Thursday, January 16, the man, Christopher Otoo, 21, pleaded guilty to a charge of assault and was sentenced to 60 days in jail and two years probation. Part of his probation order, bans Otoo from TTC vehicles and property between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., or with alcohol or non-prescription drugs in his system.

On average, at least two TTC employees are assaulted every day. The assaults range from punching, slapping and spitting, to threatening physical harm or death. The TTC’s court advocates work with Crown attorneys and the courts to secure the stiffest penalties possible for those convicted of assaulting or threatening TTC employees. They continue to seek ways to restrict those convicted of these crimes from using public transit in Toronto.
