Buses replace subway, May 10, 11:
Kennedy to Woodbine

The TTC’s ongoing project to replace the tracks along the 2 Bloor - Danforth subway line east of Victoria Park Station requires it to completely close the line between Kennedy and Woodbine Stations this weekend, Saturday, May 10 and Sunday, May 11.

It’s replacing the on a cross-over section of the line. A cross-over allows trains to change from one track to another, so that the trains can proceed in the opposite direction. The work will use newer technology and design of rail components for new track at cross-overs to provide a smoother ride for passengers through this section.

While this section of the line is closed, the TTC is operating frequent, accessible buses between the stations. The buses will stop to drop off or pick up passengers inside Warden, Victoria Park and Main Street Stations in both directions as they proceed between Kennedy and Woodbine.

Some buses will also operate between Kennedy and Pape Stations for passengers requiring an accessible subway station. (Pape has an elevator, which passengers can use to access the subway platforms.)

Since the week of Monday, March 31, crews have been working overnight nightly to get ready to replace the tracks in this open-cut section of the subway. They’ve been removing the “ballast” — crushed stones supporting the tracks and ties — using one to two subway work-cars with a vacuum-like unit, instead of shoveling the ballast by hand from the track area. This less time-consuming method is also less likely to damage underground cabling and possibly disrupt subway service.

The TTC has also been regularly slowing trains down as they pass over this section of track. It expects to resume regular service at normal speeds through the area in late June.

The TTC plans to close this section of the subway over two more weekends in May and June: Saturday, May 24 and Sunday, May 25 and Saturday, June 14 and Sunday, June 15.
