DRT, GRT raise fares, July 1 *

You’ll be paying more to ride the bus in Durham and Waterloo Regions to travel to various Canada Day events or fireworks displays. Fares increase in the two regional municipalities, starting tomorrow, Tuesday, July 1.

Back in January, Durham Region Transit’s Transit Executive Committee approved raising DRT fares by an average of 3 per cent in all fare categories.

The Region of Durham says the higher fares help it support the higher costs to operate DRT buses, without increasing property taxes. It says the new fares provide passengers with a larger discount if they buy tickets or monthly passes, instead of paying with cash.

You’ll have to throw in an extra 15 cents into the farebox, starting tomorrow, as cash fares will be $3.25, instead of just $3.10. The cost of a monthly pass goes up $3 to $106, while buying a strip of 10 adult tickets will set you back $28.50, instead of $27.80.

You’ll need another dime to pay seniors cash fares tomorrow, as they jump ten cents to $2.10. Seniors monthly passes cost $42.75, instead of $41.50.

Until Thursday, July 31, you can exchange “old” or expired tickets and the difference in value for new tickets or load a PRESTO card with the equivalent of the value of the expired tickets.

Until Saturday, November 1, you can also ask to exchange “old” tickets by writing to: Durham Region Transit, 605 Rossland Road East, Box 623, Whitby, Ontario, L1N 6A3.

If DRT approves your request, it will offer a rounded-down value of tickets may be offered to the customer. For example, it will exchange ten “old” tickets for nine new tickets.

As part of Waterloo Region’s 2104 budget, its regional council approved raising Grand River Transit fares Tuesday, July 1. The fare change affects tickets and passes, but not cash fares.

GRT says that “The fare change helps support ongoing improvements to transit service in the region as outlined in the 2011 - 2014 Grand River Transit Business Plan.”

Although cash fares remain the same as in 2013 at $3, GRT is upping the cost of many of its other fare categories. For example, the cost to adult passengers for buying a monthly pass goes up by $4 from $72 to $76. Adults who buy strips of five tickets will see the price rise by 85 cents from $11.50 to $12.35.

University students who use U-Passes make up 27.5 per cent of Grand River Transit riders. The price of the passes increases from $72.23 to $77.29 each month.
