Davis Drive rapidway construction:
July 5 to 11

Updated — Monday, July 7, 12:54 p.m.

Metrolinx and York Region contractors continue the project to build a rapidway — bus-only lanes in the centre of the roadway — along Davis Drive in Newmarket.

Crews are restocking construction materials along Davis Drive Saturday, July 5, from 7 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Crews continue to widen Davis Drive on the north side. They are currently working east of George Street, heading west toward Yonge Street. Watch for directional signs highlighting which business entrances are open along this part of Davis Drive.

Crews continue to install curbs in two sections along Davis Drive next week, starting Monday, July 7. They’ll start working on the north side between Bethel Church and Vincent Street. They’ll then work on the south side between Southlake Regional Health Center and Roxborough Road.

They’ll work across driveways one half at a time to maintain access. Since they’ll be narrowing driveways during the work, look for directional signs to guide you into and out of parking lots.

Crews are starting underground telecommunications work on Prospect Street. They’ll reduce traffic around the work area to just one lane in each direction and on-street parking will not be available.

The work does not affect the Prospect Street entrance to Southlake Regional Health Centre. Crews will block the west sidewalk in front of 22 Prospect Street, when they are working in that area.

Work continues “for a week and a half”, or until July 16.

Current or upcoming temporary side street closures:

  • Superior Street is closed until July 16.
  • George Street is closed from July 7 until July 22.

Crews start installing the south side of the Western Creek Culvert under Davis Drive near Niagara Street Thursday, July 10.

The work blocks the usual entrance into Dentistry On Davis. You can access that business through the parking lot of the nearby plaza. Please follow directional signs.

Work continues for about three months or until October 10.

Overnight from 8 p.m. Monday, July 7 until 6 a.m. Tuesday, July 8 and continuing nightly until 6 a.m. Thursday, July 8, crews will be working on the north and south sides of Davis Drive near the Tannery.

They’ll reduce Davis to just one lane for both east- and westbound traffic over the Keith Bridge. Traffic-control personnel and “paid-duty” York Regional Police officers will be on-site to manage two-way traffic in this area. Davis will again be open to one lane of traffic in each direction at 6 a.m. each day.

Overnight, from 8 p.m. Thursday, July 10 until 6 a.m. Friday, July 11, crews will reduce traffic to just one lane for both east- and westbound traffic at Davis Drive and Superior Street. Traffic-control personnel and “paid-duty” York Regional Police officers will be on-site to manage two-way traffic in this area. Davis will again be open to one lane of traffic in each direction at 6 a.m. Friday.

Expect noise.

Westbound York Region Transit buses again drop off or pick up passengers on Davis at Longford Drive at the original bus-stop site in front of the Tim Horton’s.

Eastbound buses again serve passengers on Davis at Parkside Drive at the original bus-stop site on the southwest corner.

Westbound buses on Davis at Vincent Street continue to serve passengers at a temporary stop on the northeast corner.

During Davis Drive rapidway construction, expect delays for:

  • GO Transit express buses operating along the 65 Newmarket / Toronto route; and
  • York Region Transit passengers riding local buses operating along the 44 Bristol, 50 Queensway, 54 Bayview, 55 / 55B Davis Drive, 58 Mount Albert, 223 Newmarket GO shuttle and 520 / 521 Newmarket community routes.
