TTC crews continue rebuilding the streetcar tracks on Queens Quay West, as part of WATERFRONToronto’s project to upgrade the streetscape.
The City is temporarily closing York Street between Harbour Street and Queens Quay West until Friday, October 3.
While the street is closed, crews are connecting the newly installed storm-water infrastructure on Queens Quay West to the infrastructure on York Street.
South- and northbound traffic will have no access to or from Queens Quay from York Street. Westbound traffic on Queens Quay West will continue through the intersection.
Last week, crews completed paving the base layer of asphalt between the Peter Slip Bridge and Rees Street. This weekend, Saturday, September 27 and Sunday, September 28, they’ll shift westbound traffic on Queens Quay West to the north lanes of the new roadway.
Last week, crews started removing the fast fence and jersey barriers that line the TTC right-of-way between the Queens Quay / Spadina Loop and the Bay Street Portal. This work —- which crews must complete before the TTC can resume streetcar service on Queens Quay West along the 509 Harbourfront and 510 Spadina routes — continues this week.
Before streetcar service can resume, TTC crews will start testing the new infrastructure. They’ll also start testing streetcars on the street the week of October 6.
TTC crews are almost finished installing overhead power cabling at two final sites:
- between York and Bay Streets; and
- between Rees Street and Robertson Crescent.
Crews have finished installing most new streetcar platforms. They’ll install the two remaining shelters, on the eastbound platforms at Rees Street and beside Queens Quay Terminal this week. They’ll also start building the last platform, west of Lower Spadina Avenue, this week.
Crews continue rebuilding the new roadway on Queens Quay:
- between Peter Slip Bridge and Rees Street: Crews finished pouring the concrete road base in this area, then paved the asphalt late last week.
- between Rees Street and Rees Parkette: This week, crews will continue working on the north-side concrete curb cradles, and placing new granite curb beside 260 / 270 Queens Quay West. Crews will also complete the city standard brick gutters and TTC concrete buffers and adjust the utility access portals (“manholes”) and catch basins in this area.
The contractors have two crews working this weekend, Saturday, September 27 and Sunday, September 28:
- Across the entire Queens Quay project site:
- finishing installing all underground TTC transit power conduits and installing temporary traffic signals at intersections.
- removing fast fence and concrete jersey barriers to get ready to shift traffic lanes between Queens Quay / Spadina Loop and Rees Street.
- pulling new TTC electrical cabling through the underground conduit infrastructure.
- between YoYo Ma Lane and the Bay Street Portal, including Queens Quay / Spadina Loop: TTC crews are installing poles, cantilever arms and overhead cabling.
- between Peter Slip Bridge and Rees Street: Finalizing asphalt work for the new roadway.
The TTC continues to replace streetcars operating along the 509 Harbourfront route with buses during this project. Streetcars operating along the 510 Spadina route start and end their trips in Queens Quay / Spadina Loop. The TTC intends to resume regular streetcar service along both routes — on Queens Quay West and through the Bay Street Portal to and from Union Station — Sunday, October 12.
