More MiWay service ahead,
as Mississauga approves 2015 budget

Mississauga City Council passed the city’s 2015 budget last Wednesday, February 11. The budget will increase property taxes by 2.2 per cent for residential taxpayers. The increase includes 1.3 per cent for the city’s services and proposes 0.9 per cent for Region of Peel services.

Highlights of the budget include:

  • More transit services to meet the growing demandMiWay will add 41,000 service hours and new express routes along the Mississauga Transitway.
  • An advanced transportation management system — The system will help the City’s traffic control system respond better to changing traffic conditions.
  • A two per cent capital infrastructure and debt repayment levy — The City needs about $128 million per year. Current sources of funding, including property taxes, reserve funds and gas taxes, still leave the City short about $60 million. The new levy will address this gap.
  • A capital budget for 2015 of $195.2 million — The capital plan includes transportation projects like the transitway, road and bridge rehabilitation and other infrastructure projects.
