Buses replace streetcars on Queensway
and Lake Shore, March 28 to March 30

TTC crews are repairing a short section of track at the intersection of The Queensway with Windermere Avenue this weekend. They’ll also replace a 60-metre (200-foot) section of rail will under the overpass near Humber Loop. During both projects, they’ll be replacing, welding and grinding the rail and installing new concrete.

All day Saturday and Sunday and early Monday, buses replace streetcars operating along the 301 Queen overnight and 501 Queen routes west of Roncesvalles Avenue. Streetcars start and end their trips in Sunnyside Loop, on the northeast corner of Sunnyside Avenue and The Queensway, one block west of Roncesvalles.

The buses drop off or pick up passengers at stops beside the curb, instead of the centre-road “island” streetcar platforms. The buses also divert from the usual route in both directions along Park Lawn Road and The Queensway between Park Lawn and Humber Loop. Buses replacing the cars do not drop off or pick up passengers at stops along Lake Shore Boulevard West east of Park Lawn Road. They also don’t enter Humber Loop, although buses operating along the 66 Prince Edward and 80 Queensway routes continue to do so.

You can transfer between streetcars and the buses at Roncesvalles Avenue to continue your trips further east- or westward along the routes.

Starting at about 7:30 a.m. Saturday, March 28, a crew will break up and remove concrete in the track area to expose the rail, during daylight hours.

Once they’ve dug out this section, they’ll install and weld a new piece of rail by 9 p.m. Saturday. They’ll start placing concrete Sunday morning. They’ll clear the work area in time for streetcars to resume regular service by 5 a.m. Monday, December 30.

Expect noise from equipment.

Traffic through will continue through the intersection. The work will block the southbound curb lane on Windermere Avenue to provide a safe work zone for the crew. Signs will direct pedestrians to cross to the east side of the intersection.
