Rapidway on Highway 7 West:
More construction starts March 25

Metrolinx and York Region contractors continue getting ready to build a rapidway — bus-only lanes in the centre of the roadway — along Highway 7 West from west of Jane Street to east of Keele Street.

As part of rapidway construction, crews are upgrading storm sewers on Highway 7 overnight, tonight, Wednesday, March 25 at 8 p.m. until 7 a.m., tomorrow Thursday, March 26 and continuing overnight nightly.

The crews will reduce Highway 7 to just one lane in each direction between just east of Edgeley Boulevard to Jane Street. They’ll shift traffic — first to the north side of Highway 7 and then to the south side. Each morning, they’ll reopen all traffic lanes, covering work areas with steel plates.

Sidewalks, crosswalks and bus stops remain open and directional signs will guide pedestrians safely around the work zone. If necessary, “paid-duty” York Regional Police officers will be on site to direct motorists and pedestrians.

Work continues until 7 a.m. April 1.

Crews are also upgrading storm sewers on Highway 7 overnight, Monday, March 30 at 8 p.m. until 7 a.m. Tuesday, March 31 and continuing overnight nightly.

The crews will reduce Highway 7 to just one lane in each direction between Keele Street and Bowes Road / Baldwin Avenue. They’ll shift traffic — first to the north side of Highway 7 and then to the south side. Each morning, they’ll reopen all traffic lanes, covering work areas with steel plates.

They’ll also block overnight access to and from Highway 7 at Hillside Avenue, detouring traffic along Baldwin Avenue.

Sidewalks, crosswalks and bus stops remain open and directional signs will guide pedestrians safely around the work zone. If necessary, “paid-duty” York Regional Police officers will be on site to direct motorists and pedestrians.

Work continues until 7 a.m. April 6.

During Highway 7 West rapidway construction, expect delays for:

  • Brampton Transit Züm express buses operating along the 501 Züm Queen route;
  • TTC buses operating along the 35D Jane and 107 Keele North routes; and
  • York Region Transit Viva express buses operating along the Viva orange route and YRT local buses operating along the 20 Jane and 77 Highway 7 routes.
