York Region Transit raises fares,
July 1

Yesterday, Thursday, March 26, York Region Council approved a two-year plan to “adjust” York Regional Transit / Viva fares, starting Canada Days, Wednesday, July 1, 2015 and Friday, July 1, 2016. All cash fares remain at the current rate both years.

More people have been riding YRT and Viva buses over the past five years, increasing by about 23 per cent from 18.3 million passengers in 2009 to 22.4 million in 2014. According to a York Region news release, the new fares “offset rising operating costs and support the cost of delivering service to the growing ridership.”

The release continues, “PRESTO cards, discounted monthly passes and books of tickets continue to be an economical option for all riders as they lower the cost per trip. In many cases, PRESTO cards and discounted monthly passes qualify for the federal public transit tax credit.”

Books of ten tickets jump by $1 in all fare classes both years. The cost to buy ten one-zone adult tickets increases to $34 in 2015 and $35 in 2016. Student tickets go up to $26 and $27; seniors and children’s to $21 and $22. Ten express tickets for one zone go up to $39 in 2015 and $40 in 2016.

Books of ten two-zone tickets also increase in each year: $44 and $45 for adults; $36 and $37 for students; and $30 and $31 for seniors and children. Express fares apply only to zone 1.

You’ll also have to pay more to buy passes in each year in all fare categories.
