Buses replace subway, May 9, 10:
Downsview to St Clair West

The TTC is closing part of the 1 Yonge - University subway line between Downsview and St Clair West Stations this weekend, Saturday, May 9 and Sunday, May 10. Buses replace subway service between the two stations.

While the subway line is closed, TTC crews will replace subway track ties in maintenance areas between Wilson and Yorkdale stations, continue working between Lawrence West and Eglinton West stations on the automated train control system and install subway track heaters.

In a news release, the TTC explains that, “Maintaining subway infrastructure in a state of good repair is critical to ensuring a safe, reliable transit system. While the TTC conducts subway maintenance work overnight, weekend closures are also required to continue work on more complicated and time-consuming work.”

The TTC is assigning a Wheel-Trans vehicle to operate between Downsview and St George Stations for passengers who need accessible transit. You can speak with any uniformed TTC employee to use this service.

Regular subway service resumes 6 a.m. Monday, May 11.

The TTC is again closing this section of the line Saturday, May 30 and Sunday, May 31.

This weekend, crews will work “around-the-clock” to make sure they finish before subway service starts Monday morning. Crews will start working early Saturday morning shortly after Friday subway service ends.

To upgrade the signals, crews will install about 360 ground screws (3.3-metre posts) 1.8 metres into the ground along both sides of the tracks. The posts will support new electrical, signal and communication cables. Expect noise when the equipment is operating.

Crews will deliver some materials for this work to the area on subway work-cars after Friday subway service ends. They’ll also deliver some equipment for this work on flatbed trucks. They’ll lift it with a crane onto the subway right-of-way from Allen Road south of Glencairn Station.
