TTC expanding overnight service,
starting in September

TTC overnight service after Sept - 15.jpg

Most new overnight services start early Labour Day, Monday, September 7. Service along the 353 Steeles route starts early Monday, June 22.

At its meeting last week, the Toronto Transit Commission approved a staff report recommending more TTC overnight service, starting this fall.

The commission agreed that the TTC would add seven more routes to its network of all-night services and revise 11 other routes. The TTC will also renumber most night routes to make the numbers consistent with daytime services and help passengers readily identify services that they may use.

The TTC first proposed expanding night services as part of a series of proposals it presented to the commission in August. It reaffirmed the changes and City Council endorsed them when it approved the 2015 City of Toronto budget. Mayor John Tory and the Chair of the Toronto Transit Commission, Councillor Josh Colle, revealed more details of these proposals at an on-street media event Sunday, May 24.

With these changes, the TTC can provide overnight service to many parts of the city that previously were distant from service. As a result, 95 percent of Torontonians will be within a 15-minute walk of a nighttime bus or streetcar.

All new and revised services, with one exception, start with the Sunday, September 6 schedules, meaning that they’ll begin early Labour Day, Monday, September 7. The exception is the extended 353 Steeles route, which starts early Monday, June 22, to make sure that passengers travelling to and from York University’s Keele campus during the Pan Am Games have access to overnight service.
