Buses replace subway, June 6, 7, 8
York Mills to Bloor

Bloor to York Mills.jpg

The TTC is canceling subway service along the 1 Yonge - University line between York Mills and Bloor Stations this weekend, Saturday, June 6 and Sunday, June 7.

Frequent, accessible buses replace the trains, serving the bus terminal at York Mills Station and then stopping to drop off or pick up passengers at all other stations along this section of the line.

Southbound buses operate along Yonge Street as far south as Davenport Road / Church Street, then proceed:

east- and southward along Church; and then
westward along Bloor Street East to Yonge, ending their streets.

Buses pick up passengers on the north side of Bloor Street East east of Yonge.

Northbound buses operate entirely along Yonge Street between Bloor and Wilson Avenue / York Mills Road.

For passengers requiring an elevator or using wheelchairs, scooters and other mobility aids., the TTC is operating Wheel-Trans buses between York Mills and Bloor Stations.

Lawrence, Eglinton, Davisville, St. Clair and Rosedale Stations remains open so you can pay or buy fares and connect with buses and streetcars. Summerhill Station is closed.

The commuter parking lot at York Mills Station will also be closed Saturdays and Sundays.

All trains serving the line operate between Finch and York Mills Stations and between Downsview and Bloor Stations only.

As an alternative to shuttle buses along Yonge Street to and from Lawrence Station, the TTC operating extra buses along the 52 Lawrence west route between Lawrence and Lawrence West Stations those two days. The extra buses provide quick and frequent access to and from the University branch of the subway line for passengers traveling to and from downtown. Similarly, the TTC will add more streetcars to its 512 St. Clair service, offering passengers frequent service between St. Clair and St. Clair West Stations.

TTC crews are working on a long-term project to replace signals along the line, while the subway is closed. The TTC must replace its signals, relays, wiring and cabling equipment, some of which is nearly 60 years old, since their frequent failure significantly impacts service. The TTC says that “This necessary signal and track work will result in a more reliable service.”

While the line is closed and subway trains are not operating, crews will:

  • work overnight between Eglinton and St Clair Stations to replace signal and communication cable infrastructure; (Expect noise from hammering and grinding with hand-held power tools.)
  • maintain the grounds by raking leaves and cutting grass between Summerhill and Rosedale Stations; and
  • maintain signals and tracks during the day between Summerhill and Rosedale Stations.

Crews will work “around the clock” to make sure they finish all parts of the project before the start of Monday service. They’ll start working early Saturday morning shortly after Friday subway service ends. Expect noise when some of the equipment is fully operating.

Regular subway service resumes Monday, June 8.

Plan your trips on the subway ahead of time this Saturday and Sunday to avoid stress and crowds. Leave extra time in your schedule and expect longer traveling times those days.

While shuttle buses between the two stations will operate frequently, they will be crowded.

Consider traveling along the University - Spadina branch, instead of the Yonge branch, this weekend, when traveling to and from downtown Toronto and avoid the shuttle buses entirely.
