Davis Drive rapidway construction:
August 4 to 8

Update — Wednesday, August 5, 5:01 p.m.: vivaNext has revised the work schedule.

Metrolinx and York Region contractors continue the project to build a rapidway — bus-only lanes in the centre of the roadway — along Davis Drive in Newmarket.

This week, crews “make significant strides” in developing the centre lane rapidway between Alexander / Huron Heights and Roxborough / Patterson, at Main Street and between Longford / Parkside and Yonge.

Between Longford / Parkside and Yonge

Crews started paving as early as 6 a.m. today, Tuesday, August 4 west of Yonge Street and will progress eastward along Davis to Parkside Drive / Longford Drive. They work from 6 a.m. until 9 p.m. each day until Saturday, August 8.

During this phase of the project, they’ll block intersections at George Street, Barbara Road and Parkside / Longford Drives intermittently to north- and southbound through traffic as crews pave across each intersection, one at a time.

While they’re blocking the intersections:

  • Motorists on Davis can’t turn left onto the side streets and must proceed to the next intersection and then u-turn to get to their destinations.
  • North- and southbound motorists on each of the side streets must turn right onto Davis, proceed to the next intersection, u-turn, and then continue to their destinations.
  • “Paid-duty” York Regional Police officers follow the paving crews to manage traffic at each of the intersections.
  • Pedestrians can’t use the north / south crosswalks at the intersections. Security guards or police officers will direct you to the nearest intersection where you can cross Davis.

Crews may prepare before they start working at each site by setting up and dropping off materials and machinery outside of regular work hours — for example, overnight. Expect construction-related noise.

At Main Street

Starting Thursday, August 6, Crews crews started paving are paving the centre lanes of Davis near the intersection with Main Street as early as 6 a.m. today, Tuesday, August 4. They work from 6 a.m. until 9 p.m. each day until Saturday, August 8.

During this phase of the project, they’ll close the intersection to north- and southbound through traffic as they’re paving.

While the intersection is closed:

  • Motorists can’t turn left from Main onto Davis or from Davis onto Main.
  • Temporary access lanes at Superior and Vincent streets will be open for you to u-turn around the closure and get to their destinations.
  • Pedestrians can’t use the north / south crosswalks at Main and Davis during paving. You can only cross Davis at the Tannery.

Between Alexander / Huron Heights and Roxborough / Patterson

Crews will pave are paving the south side of Davis between just east of Alexander Road and Roxborough Road from 6 a.m. until 9 p.m. each day Friday, August 7, Saturday, August 8 and Monday, August 10 from Tuesday, August 4 until Saturday, August 8.

During this phase of the project, they’ll

  • block Alexander Road to traffic while they pave the intersection of Davis with Alexander Road and Huron Heights Drive.
  • intermittently block driveways on the south side of Davis between Roxborough to Alexander to pave the road. They’ll reopen driveways as soon as the asphalt cools.
  • block the south sidewalk on Davis between Home Hardware at 808 Davis and Newmarket Gospel Hall at 736 Davis. Pedestrians must cross Davis at Roxbrough Road / Patterson Street or Carlson Drive.

Crews may prepare before they start working at the site by setting up and dropping off materials and machinery outside of regular work hours — for example, overnight. Expect construction-related noise.
