Davis Drive rapidway construction continues August 17

Metrolinx and York Region contractors continue the project to build a rapidway — bus-only lanes in the centre of the roadway — along Davis Drive in Newmarket.

To help ease the flow of traffic along Davis, crews are installing left-turn traffic sensors at the intersections with Yonge Street, George Street and Barbara Road. The sensors will prioritize the advanced green arrow for motorists turning left or u-turning to through the intersections.

They’ll work from 7 p.m. Monday, August 17 until 6 a.m. Tuesday, August 18 and continue overnight nightly until 6 a.m. August 21, to reduce the impact on daytime traffic. They’ll block left-turn lanes to install the sensors.

Expect noise, dust and vibration during this phase of the project.

Starting Monday, August 17, crews are paving between Longford Drive / Parkside Drive and west of Yonge Street from 6 a.m. until 9 p.m. each day until Friday, August 21.

During this phase of the project, they’ll block intersections at George Street, Barbara Road and Parkside / Longford Drives intermittently to north- and southbound through traffic as crews pave across each intersection, one at a time.

While they’re blocking the intersections:

  • motorists on Davis can’t turn left onto the side streets and must proceed to the next intersection or temporary cut-through lane and then u-turn to get to their destinations.
  • north- and southbound motorists on each of the side streets must turn right onto Davis, proceed to the next intersection or temporary cut-through lane, u-turn, and then continue to their destinations.
  • motorists can’t u-turn at Lorne Avenue or The Tannery.
  • “paid-duty” York Regional Police officers follow the paving crews to manage traffic at each of the intersections.
  • pedestrians can’t use the north / south crosswalks at the intersections. Security guards or police officers will direct you to the nearest intersection where you can cross Davis.

Crews have created a temporary cut-through lane across the work zone at Superior Street. They may prepare before they start working at each site by setting up and dropping off materials and machinery outside of regular work hours — for example, overnight. Expect construction-related noise.

Starting Monday, August 17, from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. each day, crews continue widening the road on the north side of Davis Drive at Patterson Street.

During this phase of the project,

  • crews block Patterson to traffic, as they work across the intersection with Davis.
  • at times, crews may be working in and around driveways, but they will maintain vehicle and pedestrian access to businesses.
  • access to sidewalks area will change as work progresses.
  • expect noise, dust, vibration and more truck traffic during this phase of the project.

Work continues until August 20.
