Metrolinx and York Region contractors continue the project to build a rapidway — bus-only lanes in the centre of the roadway — along Davis Drive in Newmarket.
Crews start final paving on Davis Drive next week and continue over the next several weeks. To start, they’ll pave between just east of Main Street and just west of Yonge Street. They’ll pave the west- and eastbound traffic lanes, side streets, main intersections and, then, the rapidway.
Once they’ve finished laying the final asphalt on the west end of the corridor, they’ll start the second phase of paving between east of Huron Heights Drive / Alexander Road and Main. Throughout paving, contractors will maintain traffic lanes on Davis.
Monday, September 21, from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m., crews start paving the south side of Davis between just east of Main and just west of Yonge to just east of Main. Tuesday, September 22, they’ll pave the north side.
They’ll:
- reduce Davis Drive to one lane in each direction, wherever they’re paving the roadway.
- occasionally shift traffic lanes to the centre rapidway lanes. Traffic barrels and “paid-duty” York Regional Police officers will direct motorists through the work zone.
- keep intersections with traffic signals — Yonge Street, George Street, Barbara Road, Longford / Parkside Drives, Lorne Avenue and Main Street — open as they pave the west- and eastbound traffic lanes
- temporarily block driveways and side streets without traffic lights off Davis.
Temporary parking spots will be available on side streets.
GO Transit and York Region Transit continue to operate buses along Davis during this activity. They may, however, temporarily relocate or close bus stops as work progresses.
