From Tuesday, October 13 until Sunday, October 18, TTC track crews are replacing worn rails at the westbound streetcar stop on Queen Street East at Jones Avenue. The TTC is also detouring streetcars operating along the 301 Queen overnight and 501 Queen route next weekend.
The City of Toronto is reducing traffic lanes and restricting parking and turns to create a safe work zone for the crews.
Starting at 9 a.m. Tuesday, October 13, a crew occupies the curb lane to get ready to replace the track sections by welding rail into longer strings. Another crew saw-cuts concrete in the track area and starts digging out about 60 metres (180 feet) of track to expose the worn rail. Work continues until 9 p.m. Streetcars continue to operate through the work zone.
Wednesday, October 14 until Friday, October 16, the crews continue digging out sections of the track.
Saturday, October 17 and Sunday, October 18, the TTC will detour streetcars around the work zone, while the crews remove the worn rail and replace it with new rail. They’ll also pour new concrete around the tracks. Shuttle buses replace the cars. They’ll remove the work zone before regular streetcar service resumes Monday, October 19.
The TTC continues to replace rail in the three more locations over the next three weeks:
- Jones Avenue, eastbound - from Monday, October 19 until Sunday, October 25;
- Greenwood Avenue, eastbound - from Monday, October 26 until Sunday, November 1; and
- Saulter Street, eastbound - from Monday, November 2 until Sunday, November 8.
The TTC could not complete this work, while it closed the intersections of Queen Street East with Leslie Street and with Broadview Avenue in 2014. It says that “extending the work zones beyond those intersections would have delayed the re-opening of Queen Street. Similarly, both Jones and Greenwood were major diversion routes for traffic and buses in 2014.”
Crews will work on the rail at stops on either side of Jones Avenue one after the other to avoid closing the intersection completely and to maintain transit and traffic Queen Street throughout the work.
The TTC has also recently completed similar work to upgrade the rails on Queen Street East:
- at Alton Avenue / Laing Street - from Monday, September 21 until Sunday, October 4 ; and
- at Ontario Street - from Monday, October 5 until Sunday, October 11.
