Davis Drive rapidway:
Training starts, November 2

Metrolinx and York Region contractors continue the project to build a rapidway — bus-only lanes in the centre of the roadway — along Davis Drive in Newmarket.

Metrolinx and York are almost ready to open the new bus-only lanes on Davis Drive, but first, bus drivers, winter maintenance crews and emergency response personnel start training on the rapidway. Expect to see Viva buses, snow plows, ambulances and fire trucks on Davis Drive from 5 a.m. until 7 p.m. each day during November as they familiarize themselves with systems, signals and traffic movements.

Training starts Monday, November 2 on the rapidway between Roxborough Road / Patterson Street and Yonge Street, and in mixed traffic between the Highway 404 “Park and Ride” carpool lot and Roxborough / Patterson.

The red “BUS ONLY” centre lanes are only for Viva buses and other authorized vehicles.

A new transit traffic signal will control Viva buses on the rapidway. Be sure to wait for the green light for vehicles before proceeding through the intersection.

Vivastations are not yet in service. For your safety, don’t enter the vivastation platforms.

Remain alert when crossing intersections, as drivers of Viva vehicles adjust to the new lane configuration on Davis.

YRT introduces service along its new Viva yellow route in early December.

Crews are working this weekend, Saturday, October 31 and Sunday, November 1, along the corridor on sidewalks, crosswalks, vivastations and street lighting. They’ll temporarily block traffic lanes and sidewalks in sections of Davis as they work.

In the final stages before opening the rapidway, contractors may schedule construction activities that are different than what they originally announced or planned. They may also add other work to take full advantage of favourable weather or available crews so they can complete the project as soon as possible.

During all phases of Davis Drive rapidway construction, expect delays for GO Transit buses operating along this route:

  • 65 Newmarket / Toronto.

Also expect delays for York Region Transit buses operating along these routes:

  • 44 Bristol;
  • 50 Queensway;
  • 54 Bayview;
  • 55 / 55B Davis Drive;
  • 58 Mount Albert;
  • 223 Newmarket GO shuttle; and
  • 520 / 521 Newmarket community bus.
