This weekend, the TTC is canceling subway service along the 1 Yonge - University line between Downsview and St Clair West Stations, while crews upgrade the signals along this section of the line.
All day Saturday, October 31 and Sunday, November 1, trains operate along the line only between St Clair West and Finch stations. Shuttle buses replace subway service between Downsview and St Clair West, while the subway line is closed.
The buses stop at all stations. The TTC says it’s also increasing service along these routes while this section of the subway is closed:
- 32 Eglinton West;
- 52 Lawrence West;
- 84 Sheppard West (between Downsview and Sheppard - Yonge stations);
- 109 Ranee; and
- 512 St Clair.
Downsview, Wilson, Yorkdale, Lawrence West and Eglinton West stations are open for passengers to connect with connecting buses and streetcars or to buy tickets, tokens, passes and other fare media. Glencairn Station is closed.
While the line is closed, crews are working in open-cut sections of the line:
- maintaining the tracks between Downsview Station and north of Wilson Station;
- tamping ballast (stones) on the east side of Wilson Yard to improve track reliability.
- installing ground screws to support communication and messenger cables between Wilson and Glencairn stations.
- replacing electrical components, installing wiring and upgrading signals in various locations.
The TTC says that “The existing signals, relays, wiring and cabling equipment, much of which is over 60 years old, need replacing as their failure significantly impacts service. Once Automatic Train Control is fully installed and operational, customers will see improved frequency of subway service, less crowding and greater reliability of the signal system.”
TTC and contractor crews will park their vehicles on Varna Drive between Bredonhill Court and Regina Avenue this weekend so that the crews can access track level from Yorkdale Station. Yorkdale Station is central to the closure area and is the start and finish point where all crews must sign in and sign out, get radios and receive work safety briefings.
Crews start working early Saturday morning, shortly after Friday subway service ends. First, they’ll deliver some materials for these activities to the area on subway work-cars. Then they’ll work “around-the-clock” to make sure they finish before subway service starts Monday morning. Expect noise when equipment is fully operating.
The TTC is assigning Wheel-Trans vehicles to operate between Downsview and St George stations for passengers requiring a station with an elevator.

Instead, buses stop in both directions at Bathurst Street and Eglinton Avenue West.
