Remembrance Day is Wednesday, November 11 and many communities in the Greater Toronto, Hamilton and Golden Horseshoe areas commemorate and honor veterans of Canada’s wars with processions and ceremonies that day and Wednesday, November 11.

Specifically, the Remembrance Day events in the Ancaster area of Hamilton, Aurora, Barrie, the Bowmanville area of Clarington, Brampton, Burlington, the Dundas area of Hamilton, the East York area of Toronto, the Galt City Centre area of Cambridge, Guelph, downtown Hamilton, Kitchener, the Merritton area of St. Catharines, the Newcastle area of Clarington, Oakville, Oshawa, the Port Credit area of Mississauga, downtown St. Catharines, the Stoney Creek area of Hamilton, the Streetsville area of Mississauga, downtown Toronto, the Unionville area of Markham, Uxbridge, Whitby and the Woodbridge area of Vaughan affect transit services in those communities.

A ceremony at John McCrae House on Water Street takes place at 9 a.m. A parade forms at 9:50 a.m., on Farquhar Street near the Guelph Armouries, then marches along Wyndham Streets South and North and Macdonell Street to the Sleeman Centre for a ceremony at 10 a.m. After the ceremony, the parade moves along Woolwich Street, passing the Guelph cenotaph at Woolwich Street and Wyndham Street North / Eramosa Road, then southward along Wyndham North, through St. George’s Square and continuing southward along Wyndham to Farquhar Street.

The City of Hamilton is closing

Sunday morning to accommodate the ceremony and parade.

The parade starts at the James Foote VC Hamilton Armories on James Street North and proceeds to the Cenotaph at Veterans Place in Gore Park. The City is not closing James Street North but the marchers may delay buses operating along the street.

The event affects Burlington Transit, GO Transit and Hamilton Street Railway services in downtown Hamilton.

Kitchener


The Royal Canadian Legion, Fred Gies Branch 50, is hosting a Remembrance Day ceremony at the Kitchener Cenotaph at Duke Street East and Frederick Street. John McCrae House was the home of Lieutenant Colonel John Alexander McCrae, a poet, physician, author, artist and soldier during World War I and a surgeon during the battle of Ypres. On January 28, 1918, while still commanding No. 3 Canadian General Hospital (McGill) at Boulogne, McCrae died of pneumonia.

On Remembrance Day, we remember McCrae for his famous poem, In Flanders Fields.
