Queen / Spadina overhead wiring upgrades:
TTC detours, November 17 to 19



The TTC is shutting off the power to its overhead wiring overnight this week at:

  • the intersection of Queen Street West and Spadina Avenue.

TTC electrical crews are restringing new overhead power wires on Queen throughout the intersection. Upgrading the wiring is necessary so the TTC can operate its new accessible streetcars on Queen. Over the past two years, electrical crews have been upgrading the overhead wire system along all TTC streetcar lines.

While work proceeds, the TTC is diverting streetcars operating along these routes:

  • 301 Queen overnight;
  • 317 Spadina overnight;
  • 501 Queen; and
  • 510 Spadina.

It’s also operating shuttle buses to replace streetcars on Queen Street West and on Spadina Avenue. The buses drop off or pick up passengers on Queen Streets West and East between Dufferin and Sherbourne Streets and on Spadina and Lower Spadina Avenues between Spadina Station and Queens Quay Loop.

Crews are working and detours are in effect from 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, November 17 until 4 a.m., Wednesday, November 18 and from 11:30 p.m. Wednesday until 4 a.m., Thursday, November 19.

The TTC previously scheduled this work from 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 27 until 4 a.m. Wednesday, October 28, from 11:30 p.m. Wednesday until 4 a.m. Thursday, October 29 and from 11:30 p.m. Thursday until 4 a.m. Friday, October 30.

The crews use two to three overhead trucks with hydraulic equipment during this work. You may hear beeping sounds from back-up alarms on the trucks and see equipment lights throughout the night.


501 Queen
301 Queen overnight

From 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, November 17 until 4 a.m. Wednesday, November 18 and from 11:30 p.m. Wednesday until 4 a.m. Thursday, October 19, eastbound cars operate along their regular route to Queen Street West and Shaw Street, then detour:

southward along Shaw;
eastward along King Streets West and East; and then
northward along Church Street to Queen Street East,
resuming their regular route eastward along Queen East.

Eastbound cars skip their regular stops

  • on Queen Street West at Strachan Avenue, Niagara, Tecumseth and Bathurst Streets, Augusta and Spadina Avenues, Peter, John and Duncan Streets, University Avenue and York, Bay and Yonge Streets and
  • on Queen Street East at Victoria and Church Streets.

Instead, eastbound cars drop off or pick up passengers at temporary stops

  • on Shaw Street across from Adelaide Street West,
  • on King Street West at Strachan Avenue, Tecumseth, Niagara, Bathurst and Portland Streets, across from Brant Street, at Spadina Avenue, Blue Jays Way, John and Simcoe Streets, University Avenue and York, Bay and Yonge Streets,
  • on King Street East at Church Street and
  • on Church Street north of Lombard Street and at Queen Street East.

Westbound cars reverse the eastbound detour routing.

Westbound cars skip their regular stops

  • on Queen Street East at Victoria and Yonge Streets,
  • on Queen Street West at Bay Street, across from York Street, at University Avenue, west of Simcoe Street, at McCaul, John and Soho Streets, Spadina, Augusta and Denison Avenues, Bathurst Street, Palmerston Avenue, Claremont Street, across from Strachan Avenue and at Shaw Street.

Instead, westbound cars drop off or pick up passengers at temporary stops

  • on Church Street at Richmond, Adelaide and King Streets East,
  • on King Street East at Victoria and Yonge Streets,
  • on King Street West at Bay and York Streets, University Avenue, Simcoe, John and Peter Streets, Spadina Avenue, west of Brant Street, at Portland, Bathurst, Tecumseth and Niagara Streets, Strachan Avenue and Shaw Street and
  • on Shaw Street north of King Street West and at Adelaide and Queen Streets West.

Shuttle buses replace streetcars on Queen Street West. The buses drop off or pick up passengers on Queen Streets East and West between Dufferin and Sherbourne Streets.

301 / 501 Queen shuttle bus

From 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, November 17 until 4 a.m. Wednesday, November 18 and from 11:30 p.m. Wednesday until 4 a.m. Thursday, October 19, buses replace or supplement streetcars operating along the 301 Queen overnight and 501 Queen routes, dropping off or picking up passengers between Dufferin and Sherbourne Streets.

Eastbound buses start their trips on Queen Street West in the area of Dufferin Street, then proceed:

eastward along Queen Streets West and East;
northward along Sherbourne Street; and then
eastward along Dundas Street East to Parliament Street,
ending their trips.

Eastbound buses drop off or pick up passengers at stops

  • on Queen Street West across from Gladstone Avenue, at Abell Street, Dovercourt Road, Lower Ossington Avenue, Shaw Street, Strachan Avenue, Niagara, Tecumseth and Bathurst Streets, Augusta and Spadina Avenues, Peter, John and Duncan Streets, University Avenue and York, Bay and Yonge Streets and
  • on Queen Street East at Victoria, Church, Jarvis and Sherbourne Streets,
  • on Sherbourne Street at Shuter Street and Dundas Street East and
  • on Dundas Street East at Ontario and Parliament Streets.

Westbound buses start their trips on Dundas Street East at Parliament Street, then proceed:

southward along Parliament; and then
westward along Queen Streets East and West to the area of Dufferin Street,
ending their trips.

Westbound buses drop off or pick up passengers at stops

  • on Dundas Street East at Parliament Street,
  • on Parliament Street at Shuter Street and Queen Street East,
  • on Queen Street East at Ontario, Sherbourne, Jarvis, Church, Victoria and Yonge Streets,
  • on Queen Street West at Bay Street, across from York Street, at University Avenue, west of Simcoe Street, at McCaul, John and Soho Streets, Spadina, Augusta and Denison Avenues, Bathurst Street, Palmerston Avenue, Claremont Street, across from Strachan Avenue, at Shaw Street, Ossington Avenue, Dovercourt Road and Beaconsfield and Gladstone Avenues.

(The TTC has not announced how buses loop at the west end of their route. On previous occasions when the TTC has ended shuttle bus service in the area of Dufferin Street, buses have looped:

(northward along Dufferin Street;
(eastward along Peel Avenue; and then
southward along Gladstone Avenue to Queen Street West.)

510 Spadina
317 Spadina overnight

From 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, November 17 until 4 a.m. Wednesday, November 18 and from 11:30 p.m. Wednesday until 4 a.m. Thursday, October 19, southbound cars operate along their regular route to Spadina Avenue and College Street, then detour:

westward along College;
southward along Bathurst Street; and then
eastward along King Street West to Spadina,
resuming their regular route southward along Spadina.

Southbound cars skip their regular stops

  • on Spadina Avenue south of College and Nassau Streets and Dundas Street West, across from Sullivan Street, south of Queen Street West and at King Street West.

Instead, southbound cars drop off or pick up passengers at temporary stops

  • on College Street at Major, Borden and Bathurst Streets,
  • on Bathurst Street at Nassau Street, Dundas Street West, beside #276 Bathurst, at Robinson Street, Queen Street West, Portugal Square and King Street West and
  • on King Street West at Portland Street, across from Brant Street and at Spadina Avenue.

Northbound cars reverse the southbound detour routing.

Northbound cars skip their regular stops

  • on Spadina Avenue north of King Street West, at Richmond Street West, north of Queen Street West, Sullivan Street and Dundas Street West and across from Nassau Street.

Instead, northbound cars drop off or pick up passengers at temporary stops

  • on King Street West west of Brant Street and at Portland and Bathurst Streets,
  • on Bathurst Street at Adelaide and Queen Streets West, north of Carr Street, at Dundas Street West and Nassau and College Streets and
  • on College Street at Borden Street and Augusta and Spadina Avenues.

Shuttle buses replace streetcars on Spadina and Lower Spadina Avenues. The buses drop off or pick up passengers between Spadina Station and Queens Quay Loop.

317 / 510 Spadina shuttle bus

From 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, November 17 until 4 a.m. Wednesday, November 18 and from 11:30 p.m. Wednesday until 4 a.m. Thursday, October 19, buses replace or supplement streetcars operating along the 317 Spadina overnight and 510 Spadina routes, dropping off or picking up passengers between Spadina Station and Queens Quay Loop.

The TTC has not announced the exact routing for the buses at the north end of their route, since ongoing construction in the bus loop at Spadina Station may block buses from using the loop as a terminal.

Southbound buses start picking up passengers on Spadina Road just north of Bloor Street West, then proceed:

southward along Spadina Road, Spadina Avenue, Spadina Crescent, Spadina Avenue and Lower Spadina Avenue;
eastward along Queens Quay West; and then
northward into Spadina / Queens Quay Loop,
ending their trips.

Southbound buses drop off or pick up passengers at temporary stops beside the curb, near regular centre-road, “island” streetcar stops

  • on Spadina Road at Bloor Street West,
  • on Spadina Avenue south of Sussex and Harbord Streets, at Willcocks Street, south of College and Nassau Streets and Dundas Street West, across from Sullivan Street, south of Queen Street West and at King and Front Streets West,
  • on Lower Spadina Avenue at Fort York Boulevard,
  • on Queens Quay West east of Lower Spadina Avenue and
  • in Spadina / Queens Quay Loop.

Northbound buses start their trips in Spadina / Queens Quay Loop, then proceed:

northward along Lower Spadina and Spadina Avenues, Spadina Crescent, Spadina Avenue and Spadina Road to just north of Bloor Street West,
ending their trips.

Northbound buses drop off or pick up passengers at temporary stops beside the curb, near regular centre-road, “island” streetcar stops

  • in Spadina / Queens Quay Loop,
  • on Lower Spadina Avenue north of Bremner Boulevard,
  • on Spadina Avenue north of Front and King Streets West, at Richmond Street West, north of Queen Street West, Sullivan Street and Dundas Street West, at Nassau Street, north of College Street, at Willcocks Street, north of Harbord Street and at Sussex Street and
  • on Spadina Road north of Bloor Street West.
