TTC resumes subway service after midnight
north of Eglinton, starting December 18

Next Friday, December 18, you can ride the TTC’s 1 Yonge - University line all the way to Finch Station after midnight every night.

The TTC has closed subway service after midnight north of Lawrence Station since Sunday, June 22, 2008 and north of Eglinton Station since Monday, February 16, 2009. While the subway was closed, TTC crews repaired and upgraded the tunnel liner to ensure safe operation of the subway line.

According to a TTC news release,

“In June, 2008, the TTC adopted the early closure to facilitate the repair of concrete tunnel liners, as the normal weekend and night maintenance window was insufficient to carry out the extensive work required.”

Frequent shuttle buses carried passengers to and from Finch Station after midnight. With the reopening of early morning subway service, the TTC can redeploy those buses to serve other routes.

While the subway was closed after midnight, the TTC also renovated the outer bus loop at Lawrence Station. Crews also replaced tiles on the bus platform and repaired the fire ventilation and fan shafts.

The TTC closed the subway every morning after midnight except Sundays. Since the subway opened later Sundays, the TTC had enough time to complete the work before regular service started and passengers did not have to transfer to buses at Eglinton.
