December 21 to 31



During the weeks before and after Christmas, people travel less often by transit. Classes are over until the new year so students are off and many people take vacation days to enjoy the holidays.

With fewer passengers, local transit systems are decreasing or modifying their services to save on resources — drivers and vehicles. Brampton Transit, MiWay, Oakville Transitand York Region Transit are decreasing Monday-to-Friday rush-hour service, while Burlington Transit, Durham Region Transit, GO Transit, Grand River Transit, Guelph Transit and the TTC are decreasing services Mondays to Fridays at various times throughout the day.


The transit agencies are modifying service along these routes:

Brampton Transit is decreasing the frequency of service along four regular routes, Mondays to Fridays from Monday, December 21 until Thursday, December 31, except holidays. It’s also supporting GO Transit’s “early homebound” rush-hour by scheduling earlier buses on another route Christmas Eve, Wednesday, December 24 and New Year’s Eve, Wednesday, December 31.

7 / 7A Kennedy

From Monday, December 21 until Thursday, December 31, except holidays, buses drop off or pick up passengers at stops along the route Mondays to Fridays during rush hours:

  • every 10 minutes, instead of every 7½ minutes, south of Heart Lake Terminal.
92 Bramalea GO shuttle

Christmas Eve, Thursday, December 24 and New Year’s Eve, Thursday, December 31, Brampton Transit supports GO Transit’s “early homebound” rush-hour service by scheduling earlier buses along the route. Buses meet earlier GO trains operating along the 31 Kitchener line at Bramalea GO Station. The earlier buses leave the station at 1:30, 2:30 and 3:30 p.m.

11 / 11A Steeles West

From Monday, December 21 until Thursday, December 31, except holidays, buses drop off or pick up passengers at stops along the route Mondays to Fridays during afternoon rush hours:

+every 11 minutes, instead of every 8 minutes, east of Brampton Gateway Terminal; and + every 22 minutes, instead of every 16 minutes, west of Brampton Gateway Terminal.

Holiday service ends and regular service resumes Monday, January 4, 2016.

502 Züm Main

From Monday, December 21 until Thursday, December 31, except holidays, buses drop off or pick up passengers at stops along the route:

  • every 10 minutes, instead of every 9 minutes Mondays to Fridays during rush hours; and
  • every 12 minutes, instead of every 11 minutes, from about 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.

From Monday, December 21 until Thursday, December 31, except holidays, buses drop off or pick up passengers at stops along the route Mondays to Fridays during rush hours:

  • every 20 minutes, instead of every 14 minutes, west of Brampton Gateway Terminal.

12 Conestoga Mall / Fairview Mall

Mondays to Fridays from Monday, December 21 until Thursday, December 31, except holidays, GRT is decreasing the frequency of service north of University Avenue and King Street North Mondays to Fridays during rush hours.

Southbound buses drop off or pick up passengers at stops between Conestoga Mall and University Avenue West west of King Street North every 30 minutes, instead of every 15 minutes, during morning rush hours. Northbound buses serve the stops every 30 minutes, instead of every 15 minutes, during afternoon rush hours.

It’s also isn’t operating the northbound bus that usually leaves Westmount Road West west of Highland Road West at 7:50 a.m. Mondays to Fridays. The bus usually ends its trip on University Avenue West east of Seagram Drive 8:02 a.m.

Guelph Transit is temporarily revising the path for buses operating along the route to provide service on Victoria Road South. Starting Monday, December 21 buses operate along the 5A Gordon branch of the route, operating southbound along Victoria Road South, between Stone Road East and Arkell Road Mondays to Fridays during peak service times: from 7 until 9:45 a.m. and from 2 until 5:45 p.m.

Southbound buses start their trips at the University Centre Terminal on the University of Guelph campus, then proceed:

eastward along South Ring Road East;
northward along East Ring Road;
eastward along College Avenue East;
southward** along Victoria Avenue South; and then
westward along Arkell Road to Summerfield Drive,
resuming the regular route southward along Summerfield.

Southbound buses skip their regular stops

  • on Gordon Street at Stone Road West, Harvard Road, Kortright Road West and Harts Lane West, beside #1155 Gordon Street and at Edinburgh Road South and
  • on Arkell Road east of Gordon Street and at Ridgeway Avenue.

Instead, southbound buses drop off or pick up passengers at stops:

  • on Victoria Road South beside #1035 Victoria South and at McAllister Boulevard.

Northbound buses operate along their regular route.

Mondays to Fridays from Monday, December 21 until Thursday, December 31, except holidays, MiWay operates fewer short-turning buses between the University of Toronto’s Mississauga campus and City Centre Terminal.

Buses drop off or pick up passengers at stops east of the campus:

  • about every 16 minutes, instead of every 13 minutes from about 8 until 10 p.m. and from about 2 until 8 p.m.

Officially, this is what the TTC has announced — “regular weekday service” during the holiday period — from Monday, December 21 until Thursday, December 31.

Its news release provides more detail:

“Holiday service is as follows:

Mon., Dec. 21 to Thurs., Dec.24

  • Weekday service.
  • Subway and most routes start at 6 a.m.

Fri., December 25 - Christmas Day

  • Sunday service.
  • Subway and most routes start at 9 a.m.

Sat., Dec. 26 - Boxing Day

  • Holiday service.
  • Subway and most routes start at 6 a.m.

Sun., Dec. 27

  • Sunday service.
  • Subway and most routes start at 9 a.m.

Monday, Dec. 28 to Wed., Dec. 30

  • Weekday service.
  • Subway and most routes start at 6 a.m.

“Thurs., Dec. 31 - New Year’s Eve - travel free from 7 p.m. until 7 a.m., Jan. 1

  • Weekday service, with late evening service extended later than usual.
  • Subway and most routes start at 6 a.m.
  • Free parking at TTC parking lots after 3 p.m.
  • Subway and most bus and streetcar service extended until approximately 4 a.m., Fri., Jan. 1.

Fri., Jan. 1, 2016 - New Year’s Day

  • Sunday service.
  • Subway and most routes start at 9 a.m.

  • Subway and most routes start at 8 a.m., as subway service on Sundays now starts an hour earlier.”

Unofficially, though, we know that, in previous years, the TTC has also decreased the frequency of service along many routes because it expects fewer passengers to be riding transit vehicles during the holidays. This week, “regular weekday” likely really means less frequent service along many bus, streetcar and subway routes.

Starting Saturday, December 19, YRT revises the route to serve “The ROC” (the Town of Georgina’s Recreational Outdoor Centre) Saturdays, Sundays and holidays until Sunday, March 20, 2016.

Buses heading to The ROC operate along the regular 50 Queensway route to Metro Road and Civic Centre Road, then divert southward to The ROC. After turning around, they proceed northward along Civic Centre to Metro Road, resuming their regular route west- or eastward along Metro.

Saturdays, northbound buses leaving Newmarket GO Bus Terminal from 8:51 a.m. until 9:12 p.m. divert to The ROC. Southbound buses leaving Sutton and Pefferlaw from 9:19 a.m. until 9:40 p.m. divert to The ROC.

Sundays and holidays, northbound buses Newmarket terminal from 8:50 a.m. until 5:20 p.m. divert to The ROC. **Southbound buses leaving Sutton and Pefferlaw from 10:15 a.m. until 6:45 p.m. divert to The ROC.

If you bought a season pass to the ROC, you can ride the buses free of fare. Just show the driver your season pass when you board.

243 Redstone GO shuttle

Starting Sunday, November 1, YRT increases the frequency of service to every 45 minutes, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.

It’s also increasing service along the route to provide extra service to passengers traveling to and from Vaughan Mills [mall] for peak seasonal shopping days.

Saturdays, December 19 and January 2, 2016, southbound buses leave Vaughan Mills at 9:30 a.m. and every 45 minutes until 10:15 p.m. They end their trips in Finch GO Bus Terminal at 10:09 a.m. and every 45 minutes until 10:48 p.m.

New Year’s Day, Friday, January 1, 2016, southbound buses leave Vaughan Mills at 11:15 a.m. and every 45 minutes until 7:30 p.m. They end their trips in Finch Terminal at 11:51 a.m. and every 45 minutes until 8:07 p.m.

Northbound buses leave Finch at 10:30 and every 45 minutes until 6:45 p.m. They end their trips in Vaughan Mills Terminal at 11:04 a.m. and every 45 minutes until 7:20 p.m.

Buses do not operate along the route Christmas Day, Friday, December 25.
