Oakville Transit raises fares, January 1

Oakville Transit is raising the cost of two types of fares, starting tomorrow, New Year’s Day, Friday, January 1, 2016.

Tomorrow, the cost of an adult single ride with a PRESTO fare card goes up five cents to $2.85. The cost to buy an adult monthly pass with PRESTO jumps $5 to $115. (Oakville Transit considers passengers from 20 to 64 years of age as “adults”.)

While all other fares remain the same, the big news is that, after today, Thursday, December 31, OT is no longer selling senior tickets and paper monthly passes (except for those riding care-A-van door-to-door accessible transit vehicles). All passengers that would usually buy these fare media must now use PRESTO.

If you still have “old” pink senior tickets after today, Oakville Transit will continue to accept them aboard buses until Saturday, April 30, 2016. Unfortunately, Oakville Transit’s will not refund the cost of paper monthly passes and tickets and they are not transferable.

Seniors may still ride any Oakville Transit bus (as long as it’s operating in the Town of Oakville) free of fare Mondays.

(Oakville Transit considers passengers 65 years of age or older as “seniors”.)

Now that all monthly passes are available on PRESTO, OT’s loyalty program also ends today. To get the most value, load a monthly pass onto your PRESTO card to ride as often as you want.

You can load monthly passes on-line at or at an authorized PRESTO agent. You can’t load a monthly pass at a GO Transit station. You must load the full amount for a monthly pass before the start of any calendar month.

OT is also no longer selling paper versions of the Freedom Pass. Starting tomorrow, the passes are only available with PRESTO.

The Student Freedom Pass is available for students 19 years of age and younger who are attending primary or full-time secondary school only.

The Student Freedom Pass is valid for unlimited rides after 4 p.m. Monday-to-Friday evenings and all day Saturdays and Sundays for each month that you’ve bought a pass. Regular student fare applies at all other times. You must load your PRESTO card with the cash value of a single student fare or a monthly student monthly pass loaded to pay fares before 4 p.m. Mondays to Fridays.

During July and August, the monthly Student Freedom Pass allows you unlimited rides, all day, all times, all week for each month that you’ve bought a pass.

The pass is no longer valid for unlimited rides during March Break, Christmas week and statutory holidays.

Here’s how you can get and use a Freedom Pass with PRESTO:

Step 1: Buy a PRESTO card at any authorized PRESTO agent in Oakville, except for GO stations.

Step 2: Configure your PRESTO card in person at any of the agents to make sure you receive the student rate. You can’t do this on-line!

Step 3: Buy and load your card with the monthly Student Freedom Pass for just $15 per month. You can do this online, by phone or in person. If you load money online or by phone it may take 24 hours for it to appear on your card.

Step 4: You’re ready to go! When you ride, the PRESTO system deducts the transit fare from your card when you tap onto the PRESTO device on every Oakville Transit bus.
