List of weekend closures for 2016

Update — Monday, April 25, 5:51 p.m.: The TTC has canceled the closure of Line 3 that it originally scheduled for Saturday, April 30 and Sunday, May 1. It’s also closing Line 2 early Saturday, April 30, instead of closing early Sunday, May 1.

The TTC has released an official schedule for weekend construction and repairs along three of its four rapid transit lines for 2016. It’s scheduled the first weekend closure for next weekend, Saturday, March 5 and Sunday, March 6.

The TTC says, “Maintaining subway infrastructure in a state-of-good-repair is critical to ensuring a safe, reliable transit system. While the TTC does much of its maintenance work on the subway at the conclusion of service each night, it will continue to require weekend closures to complete improvements to infrastructure and signals, such as automatic train control. One weekend of work during a subway closure equals about five weeks of nightly work.”

Here’s the official list of closures. Note that various events over the year may result in the TTC revising this schedule.

The TTC is closing parts of its rapid transit network every weekend for eight weeks from Saturday, April 2 until Sunday, May 15.

In fact, parts of the rapid transit network are closed (almost) every weekend from Saturday, March 20 until Sunday, December 4, except for these holiday weekends:

  • Easter - Friday, March 25 until Monday, March 28;
  • Victoria Day - Saturday, May 21 until Monday, May 23;
  • Canada Day - Friday, July 1 until Sunday, July 3;
  • Simcoe Day - Saturday, July 30 until Monday, August 1.

The TTC is closing parts of its rapid transit network during these holiday weekends:

  • Labour Day - Saturday, September 3 until Monday, September 5; and
  • Thanksgiving - Saturday, October 8 until Monday, October 10.

More weekends without rapid-transit disruption are:

  • Saturday, July 16 23 and Sunday, July 17;
  • Saturday, August 20 and Sunday, August 21;
  • Saturday, November 12 and Sunday, November 13.

Key dates for commuters (because the TTC has scheduled more than one closure):

  • Sunday, April 17 morning, when parts of Lines 1 and 2 are closed;
  • Sunday, May 1 morning, when part of Line 2 and all of Line 3 are closed.
  • Sunday, October 9 and Thanksgiving, Monday, October 10, when parts of Lines 1 and 2 are closed; and
  • Saturday, October 22 and Sunday, October 23, when all of line 3 and part of line 4 are closed.
