Charlotte track construction:
TTC detours start March 29



Update, Thursday, April 21, 5 a.m.: TTC crews completed both phases of the project ahead of schedule. They finished working at King and Charlotte and reopened the intersection by 2 p.m. Sunday, April 10 - 15 hours earlier than scheduled. They finished track work at Adelaide and Charlotte, restored Adelaide Street and resumed streetcar service resumed into Charlotte Loop the morning of Tuesday, April 19 - three days earlier than scheduled.


TTC crews are replacing the streetcar tracks — including rails, curves and switches — at the intersection of

  • King Street West with Charlotte Street,

starting 2 a.m. tomorrow, Tuesday, March 29.

Once they’ve finished working at King and Charlotte, they’ll start the second phase of the project at the intersection of:

  • Adelaide Street West with Charlotte Street,

starting about Monday, April 11.

The TTC is detouring streetcars operating along these routes, while the crews work:

  • 304 King overnight; and
  • 504 King.

Shuttle buses replace the cars, operating between Strachan Avenue and Jarvis Street.

You may board the buses by all doors, if you have a proof of payment, such as a transfer or pass. However, if you usually use a PRESTO card to pay your fares, you’ll have to board at the front door and pay with a ticket, token or cash. The TTC has not yet equipped its buses with PRESTO devices.

The construction project also affects service along these routes:

  • 145 Downtown / Humber Bay express; and
  • 510 Spadina.

Phase 1:

About 2 a.m. tomorrow, Tuesday, March 29, TTC vehicles will deliver the new rails. The crews will will store the rails on the track allowance on King Street West between Charlotte Street and Peter Street / Blue Jays Way. They’ll start working on the streetcar overhead wiring shortly afterwards.

About 7 a.m. tomorrow, they’ll start digging out the old concrete and tracks. After they’ve placed new concrete, they’ll start installing new track.

Crews will stop breaking and removing concrete by 11 p.m. each night. They’ll install new track “around the clock”.

The City of Toronto is closing:

  • King Street West between Spadina Avenue and Peter Street / Blue Jays Way

to all through traffic from Tuesday, March 28 until 5 a.m. Monday, April 11.

Motorists and cyclists may access Charlotte Street from Adelaide Street West during Phase 1. Cyclists should dismount to cross the intersection. Pedestrians may walk through the area at all times.


Phase 2:

Starting about 5 a.m. Monday, April 11, the City will re-open the intersection of King West with Charlotte, but partially close the intersection of Adelaide West with Charlotte. The TTC will resume regular streetcar service through the King West / Charlotte intersection.

About 7 a.m. April 11, TTC crews start digging out the old concrete and tracks. After they’ve placed new concrete, they’ll start installing new track.

Crews will stop breaking and removing concrete by 11 p.m. each night. They’ll install new track “around the clock”.

The City is closing:

  • Adelaide Street West, south-side curb lanes, between Spadina Avenue and Peter Street

to through traffic from Monday, April 11 until Friday, April 22.

Motorists and cyclists may access Charlotte Street from King Street West during Phase 2. Cyclists should dismount to cross the intersection. Pedestrians may walk through the area at all times.

Both phases:

The City’s also restricting parking near the work zone. If you’ve parked your vehicle in the area and it’s blocking the work, the City will relocate it with no charge to you. If this affects you, contact parking control at 416-808-2222 to learn the location of your vehicle.

The City may further block access to other roads and sidewalks within the construction areas, so that crews can work safely. The City and TTC will maintain access for emergency vehicles at all times. Laneways and driveways that serve businesses in the area will also remain accessible for deliveries or service.

From Monday, April 11 until Friday, April 22, expect delays on Adelaide Street West between Spadina Avenue and Peter Street.

504 King
304 King overnight

From 2 a.m. Tuesday, March 29 until 5 a.m. Monday, April 11, eastbound cars operate along their regular route to King Street West and Spadina Avenue, then detour:

northward along Spadina;
eastward along Queen Streets West and East; and then
southward along Church Street to King East,
resuming their regular route eastward along King.

Eastbound cars skip their regular stops

  • on King Street West at Blue Jays Way, John and Simcoe Streets, University Avenue and York, Bay and Yonge Streets and
  • on King Street East at Church Street.

Instead, eastbound cars drop off or pick up passengers at temporary stops

  • on Spadina Avenue north of King Street West and at Richmond Street West,
  • on Queen Street West at Peter, John and Duncan Streets, University Avenue and York, Bay and Yonge Streets,
  • on Queen Street East at Victoria and Church Streets and
  • on Church Street at Richmond, Adelaide and King Streets East.

Shuttle buses replace the cars between Spadina Avenue and Church Street. Eastbound streetcar passengers may transfer to eastbound buses at stops on King Street West between Shaw Street and Spadina Avenue.

Westbound cars operate along their regular route to King Street West and York Street, then detour:

northward along York,
westward along Queen Street West; and then
southward along Spadina Avenue to King West,
resuming their regular route westward along King.

Westbound cars skip their regular stops

  • on King Street West at University Avenue and Simcoe, John and Peter Streets and Spadina Avenue.

Instead, westbound cars drop off or pick up passengers at temporary stops

  • on Queen Street West at University Avenue, west of Simcoe Street and at McCaul, John and Soho Streets and Spadina Avenue,
  • on Spadina Avenue south of Queen Street West and at King Street West.

Shuttle buses replace the cars between York Street and Spadina Avenue. Eastbound streetcar passengers may transfer to eastbound buses at stops on King Streets East and West between Church and York Streets.

304 / 504 King shuttle bus

From 2 a.m. Tuesday, March 29 until 5 a.m. Monday, April 11, buses replace streetcars operating along the 304 King overnight and 504 King routes between Spadina Avenue and Church Street.

Eastbound buses start their trips on Douro Street at King Street West, then proceed:

eastward along King Street West;
southward along Spadina Avenue;
eastward along Front Street West;
northward along Blue Jays Way; and then
eastward along King West and East to Jarvis Street,
ending their trips.

Eastbound buses drop off or pick up passengers at stops

  • on King Street West at Shaw Street, Strachan Avenue, Niagara, Tecumseth, Bathurst and Portland Street, across from Brant Street, at Spadina Avenue, John and Simcoe Streets, University Avenue and York, Bay and Yonge Streets and
  • on King Street East at Church and Jarvis Streets.

Eastbound bus passengers may transfer to eastbound streetcars on King Street East at Jarvis Street.

Westbound buses start their trips on King Street East at Jarvis Street, then proceed:

southward along Jarvis;
westward along Front Street East;
northward along Church Street;
westward along King Streets East and West;
northward along Peter Street;
westward along Richmond Street West;
southward along Spadina Avenue;
westward along King West;
southward along Strachan Avenue; and then
west- and northward along Douro Street to King,
ending their trips.

Westbound buses drop off or pick up passengers at stops

  • on King Street East (eastbound) at Jarvis Street,
  • on King Street East (westbound) at Victoria and Yonge Streets,
  • on King Street West at Bay and York Streets, University Avenue and Simcoe, John and Peter Streets,
  • on Spadina Avenue at King Street West,
  • on King Street West west of Brant Street and at Portland, Bathurst, Tecumseth and Niagara Streets and
  • on Strachan Avenue at Canniff Street.

Westbound bus passengers may transfer to westbound streetcars at stops on King Street West between Spadina and Strachan Avenues.

510 Spadina

From Tuesday, March 29 until Friday, April 22, the TTC is temporarily closing Charlotte Loop during this construction project.

Closing the loop forces the TTC to cancel service along the 510C branch between Spadina Station and King Street West. Instead, all short-turning streetcars Mondays to Fridays operate along the 510B branch between Spadina Station and Queens Quay West.

By operating more Monday-to Friday trips along the 510B branch, the TTC also increases the frequency of service along the short stretch of the route on Spadina and Lower Spadina Avenues between King Street West and Queens Quay West.

Starting Monday, March 28, streetcars drop off or pick up passengers at stops on this section of the route:

  • every 3½ minutes, instead of every 7 minutes, Mondays to Fridays during morning rush hours; and
  • every 3 minutes 20 seconds, instead of every 6 minutes 40 seconds, from about 9 a.m. until 10 p.m.
