The TTC is building second exits from stations with just one exit to increase passenger safety during emergencies.

At Wellesley Station, the TTC is building two second exits / automatic entrances, it says, “to improve passenger safety and convenience”. The transit agency is co-ordinating with local developers to build integrated second exits and automatic entrances in new condominium developments at 17 Dundonald Street (just north and east of the station) and 587 Yonge Street (on the northeast corner of Yonge and Dundonald). The official opening of these second entrances / exits depends on the progress of the condominium construction.

Closer to the opening date, TTC construction crews will re-enter the site to install the PRESTO fare-card equipment, other electrical / communication systems and the station finishes. The TTC completed the underground tunnel under Dundonald Street connecting the second exits to Wellesley Station in fall 2016.

The TTC is also building an elevator in Wellesley Station.

Note: Monday, August 3, 2020, 7:15 a.m.: This is the rare instance of a Transit Toronto post that we’ve developed long after the events it describes. The TTC didn’t provide many details of its work on this project as it proceeded, other than a construction notice that its contractors were blocking the sidewalk on Dundonald Street in September 2016. From a presentation at a public meeting in December 2017, we know that construction ended “Fall 2016”, so likely as late as Saturday, December 3, 2016. Construction likely started “Spring 2016”, possibly as early as Monday, April 4, 2016. These exact dates, however, should not be considered as official; they’re only an estimate for us to use in this placeholder post and in other documents that track transit construction projects. Official construction dates for reference remain as: “From spring until fall, 2016”.
