TTC rebuilding tracks on Bay Street,
April 25 to May 22

The TTC and the City of Toronto are replacing the streetcar tracks on:

  • Bay Street between Elm and Edward Streets,

starting Monday, April 26. The work brings the track infrastructure to state of good repair, so the TTC can accommodate diversionary routing for streetcars during other construction projects in 2016.

Crews are working on the project in two phases:

Phase 1 - Early Monday, April 25 until 11:59 p.m. Sunday, May 1

During this phase of the project, the City will restrict traffic on Bay Street to just one traffic lane in each direction between Elm Street and Dundas Street West. TTC crews are welding new rail into long strings to prepare for installing them. They’re occupying the track allowance on Bay to carry out this early work from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. each day.

The TTC is maintaining regular bus service in both directions along the 6 Bay route.

Phase 2 - Early Monday May 2 until Sunday, May 22

During this phase of the project, the City will restrict southbound traffic to just one lane between Elm Street and Dundas Street West, while crews start breaking and removing concrete from the track allowance. Northbound motorists must find alternate routes during this phase.

Crews continue breaking and removing concrete until Saturday, May 7. Expect noise during this phase, but work will end by 11 p.m. each night.

Starting Sunday, May 8, crews will install new rails, often working late evenings and nights. Crews may move new rail into position and install, weld and grind the new rail overnight. This after-hours work supports the TTC’s daytime construction activities and helps crews complete the project on schedule.

The TTC is detouring buses operating along this route, during this phase of the project:

  • 6 Bay.

6 Bay

Southbound buses operate along their regular route.

From Monday May 2 until Sunday, May 22, northbound buses operate along their regular route to Bay Street and Dundas Street West, then detour:

westward along Dundas West;
northward along University Avenue; and then
eastward along Gerrard Street West to Bay,
resuming their regular route northward along Bay.

Northbound buses skip their regular stop

  • on Bay Street at Elm Street.

Instead, northbound buses drop off or pick up passengers at temporary stops

  • on Dundas Street West at Chestnut Street and University Avenue and
  • on University Avenue at Gerrard Street West.
