Where shall we build new GO stations?

Sixty-four GO Transit rail stations serve thousands of passengers daily throughout the Greater Golden Horseshoe. Metrolinx is already working to build and connect a transit network that supports more frequent, electric, continuous service - regional express rail or “RER”.

To meet that goal, Metrolinx is looking at a number of sites for potential new stations. Access to stations and frequent service are key factors in convincing pedestrians, cyclists, transit users and drivers to use a larger GO rail service. It’s planning to develop stations that are important hubs for daily activities, not simply arrival and departure points.

Staff are considering several locations as part of the plan to expand the regional transit network. These locations result from analyzing the whole system and includes sites which are part of other municipal and public plans. They’ve developed a clear process and methodology for assessing all locations to consider possible new stations for positive and negative impacts. For example, well located stations can help to integrate regional and local transit and improve access to transit for surrounding communities. However, stations in some locations could mean longer travel times and delays that, in turn, discourage riders from using the trains. The process for evaluating new stations also balances service frequency, expansion and cost.

In stage 1 of analyzing possible new stations, staff identified a list of more than 120 sites. In stage 2, they focused their analysis, considering the impact of each possible station on service, how each could connect with other transit services and whether municipalities or passengers had previously asked for a station at each site. This Seconded the list of station sites to about 50.

Metrolinx is now at stage 3 of the process, further evaluating the remaining stations, considering strategic, economic, technical, operational and cost / revenue factors. Next, in stage 4, Metrolinx will host municipal and public consultation sessions for feedback from municipal officials, business, residents and potential future riders. In upcoming stage 5, staff will use information from the consultation events to scope the sites further for the final part of the process, stage 6. During that stage, Metrolinx will develop an in-depth business case to analyze each of the shortlisted sites.

Here is the early list of potential sites and the narrower, second list of sites. After consulting with members of the public and other stakeholders, Metrolinx will likely narrow the list further.

Neither list includes two stations already under construction or in planning for the Richmond Hill line at Gormley and Bloomington or future stations on proposed extensions of the Lakeshore lines to Bowmanville or Niagara Falls. The first list includes some sites in Hamilton that may be part of the Niagara service, but they disappear from the second list. The first list also includes two stations for the Barrie line that are already under construction or in planning stages - likely because of their status, they disappear from the second list.
