The City of Toronto is planning to close closing:

  • Richmond Street East between Church and Yonge Streets; and
  • Richmond Street West between York and Yonge Streets

during a major construction project (.pdf) this summer.

While the street is closed, City contractors are:

  • replacing sections of the water-main between Yonge and Bay Streets and connecting the new main to other water-mains;
  • partially rebuilding curbs and sidewalks, including streetscaping between Church and York Streets; and
  • partially rebuilding the roadway.

TTC crews are also:

  • removing the old streetcar tracks and rebuilding the westbound tracks between Church and York Streets.

(Since Richmond is one-way westbound for traffic, the eastbound tracks are no longer necessary. However, the TTC continues to use the westbound tracks for detouring streetcars during special events, construction or emergencies.)

To prepare passengers for the upcoming construction, the The TTC is detouring buses operating along these routes, starting Monday, June 20:

  • 141 Downtown / Mt Pleasant express;
  • 142 Downtown / Avenue Rd express;
  • 143 Downtown / Beach express;
  • 144 Downtown / Don Valley express; and
  • 145 Downtown / Humber Bay express.

Construction on Richmond Streets East and West and the detours continue until further notice November 30.
