Update — Thursday, September 29, 2:36 p.m.: The Region has announced that construction continues until October 31.

Update — Thursday, July 28, 5:01 p.m.: The Region is expanding the project overnight to block Bayly Streets East and West from 11 p.m. tonight until 6 a.m. tomorrow. DRT is detouring buses operating along the 923 Bayly route.

Region of Durham contractors are starting a project to rehabilitate:

  • Bayly Streets East and West (Regional Road 22) from 80 metres (260 feet) east of Harwood Avenue South to 70 metres (230 feet) west of Harwood South; and
  • Harwood Avenue South (Regional Road 44) from 80 metres north of Bayly Street to 70 metres south of Bayly.

During the project, crews are:

  • replacing water-mains;
  • replacing concrete curbs and sidewalks,
  • removing asphalt removal;
  • grading and concrete-paving the roadway.

Bayly Streets East and West remain open throughout construction. Contractors will maintain traffic over one lane in each direction, whenever possible. However motorists cannot turn left onto Harwood Avenue South while the project proceeds.

The Town of Ajax is closing:

  • Harwood Avenue South

in two phases to facilitate the project.

During the first phase, from Friday, July 15 until Friday, September 30, it’s closing Harwood South south of Bayly to all traffic. Afterwards, it will close Harwood South north of Bayly to all traffic for about seven weeks during the second phase of the project.

Durham Region Transit is detouring buses operating along these routes, while the street is closed:

  • 224 Harwood South / Salem South; and
  • 291 / 292 Ajax community bus.

Construction may also affect service along these routes:

The Region and its contractors intend to maintain pedestrian access along one side of Bayly throughout construction. At times, work crews may block the north / south pedestrian crossing on Bayly at Harwood, requiring pedestrians to cross Bayly at Burcher Road east of Harwood or Kitney Drive / Commercial Avenue to the west.

217 Monarch

From Friday, July 15 until Friday, September 30 Monday, October 31, passengers riding buses operating along the 223 Bayly route should expect delays resulting from construction at Bayly Street and Harwood Avenue South. Since DRT interlines buses operating along route 223 with those operating along route 217, passengers should also expect delays.

Transit agencies often interline two or more buses serving a common terminal to save resources — drivers and buses. In this case, when an eastbound buses operating along the 223 Bayly route arrives on Dreyer Drive across from Clover Ridge Drive East, it continues along the 217 Monarch route. The bus completes a trip along route 217 before returning to Dreyer and Clover Ridge and then continues along the 223 Bayly route.
