Underground Freedom Train ride
on TTC, July 31 and August 1

The TTC is hosting the fourth annual midnight Underground Freedom Train Ride in the subway, presented by A Different Booklist bookstore this Sunday, July 31. The midnight subway train ride welcomes Emancipation Day, Monday, August 1 and commemorates the role of the underground railroad in Canadian history. (Emancipation Day marks the abolition of slavery in the British Empire, including Canada, on August 1, 1834.)

Participants ride the 1 Yonge - University subway line between Union and Downsview Stations. The event starts in Union at 10:55 p.m., but the ceremonial train leaves the station at about 11:40 p.m. It arrives in Downsview Station at about 12:02 a.m. August 1, when a welcome ceremony and closing remarks take place.

The event usually attracts huge, jubilant crowds and is open to the public.
