Rapidway on Highway 7 West:
YRT detour during paving, August 27, 28

Update — Friday, August 26, 5:31 p.m.: The contractors have rescheduled the work to Saturday, August 27 evening and early Sunday, August 28. They’re also adding another component — they’ll work on the south side of the intersection of Highway 7 and Keele Street.

Metrolinx and York Region contractors continue building a rapidway — bus-only lanes in the centre of the roadway — along Highway 7 West from west of Jane Street to east of Keele Street.

From 7 p.m. tonight, Friday, August 26 until 6 a.m. tomorrow, Saturday, August 27 Saturday, August 27 until Sunday, August 28, crews are paving with red asphalt both east- and westbound lanes of the rapidway between the Canadian National Railway bridge and the GO Transit bridge.

The work interrupts the intersections of Highway 7 with Keele Street and with Bowes Road / Baldwin Avenue, one at a time, as crews pave through each and then wait for the asphalt to cool. They’ll pave the Keele intersection first, and then Bowes / Baldwin.

Afterwards, crews will pave the south part of the Keele Street / Highway 7 intersection with red asphalt. Motorists can’t access Highway 7 from south of the intersection. The work restricts east- and westbound traffic to just one lane in each direction and motorists can’t turn right onto Keele.

While crews pave the intersection with Keele, York Region Transit is detouring buses operating along these routes this route:

Paving at both intersections blocks north- and southbound through traffic. Motorists traveling along Highway 7 who wish to turn north- or southward through the intersection must detour to the next intersection to U-turn.

“Paid-duty” York Regional Police officers will be on site to help direct traffic.

Crews may also temporarily block access to bus stops and sidewalks. Look for signs to guide you safely around the work zone or to the nearest available bus stop.

Expect construction-related noise from equipment and trucks.
