Starting today, Friday, November 4, TTC track crews are replacing the worn rails at the west- and eastbound streetcar stops on Queen Street East at Sherbourne Street to reduce noise and to make sure streetcars operate safely through the area.
The TTC is detouring streetcars operating along these routes, while work proceeds:
Shuttle buses replace the cars between River and Shaw Streets.
Buses operating along the 502 Downtowner route usually also operate along the closed section of Queen Street West before 7 p.m. Mondays to Fridays. However, the TTC has not provided detour information for that route.
Rail replacement at Queen East and Sherbourne and the TTC detours continue until 5 a.m. November 7.
Note that the map incorrectly indicates that streetcars detour along Church Street, instead of Parliament Street, between Queen and King Streets.
To reduce disrupting the nearby community during these projects, TTC recently acquired a concrete milling machine, which decreases the work timeline from seven to just three days, reduces the amount of digging by backhoe and, in turn, reducing noise levels. Crews must still work overnight and chip the concrete to effectively install the new rails.
Crews will block one lane of traffic as they replace the rail. The City of Toronto will prohibit on-street parking and restrict turns to create a safe work zone for pedestrians and workers.
This weekend, crews work on the eastbound stop. They’ll return to the intersection next weekend, from Friday, November 11 until early Monday, November 14 to work on the westbound stop.
- Step 1: Starting at about 9 a.m. Friday, November 4, a TTC track crew occupies the curb lane west of Sherbourne Street to pre-weld the new rail.
- Step 2: At about 6 p.m., the TTC diverts streetcar and the track crew uses the milling machine to remove the majority of the concrete in the track area of the streetcar stop. Then they’ll chip the remaining concrete to completely expose the rails.
- Step 3: Saturday, November 5, the crew removes any remaining concrete in areas where it could not use the milling machine. They’ll cut, weld and grind the old rail and then it with the new rail. They’ll place concrete in the track area and set it to cure.
- Step 4: Sunday, November 6 at about 8 a.m., the crew places the rest of the concrete. The newly placed concrete requires curing time before the crew can remove the work zone so that full road and streetcar service can resume Monday, November 7.
501 Queen
From 6 p.m. Friday, November 4 until 5 a.m. Monday, November 7, westbound cars operate along their regular route to Queen Street East and Parliament Street, then detour:
southward along Parliament;
eastward along King Streets East and West to Spadina Avenue,
resuming their long-term detour route westward along King West.Westbound cars skip their regular stops

Instead, westbound cars drop off or pick up passengers at temporary stops

- on King Street East at Ontario, Sherbourne, Jarvis, Church and Yonge Streets,
- on King Street West at Bay and York Streets, University Avenue, John and Peter Streets, Spadina Avenue, Portland, Bathurst, Tecumseth and Niagara Streets, Strachan Avenue and Shaw Street and
- on Shaw Street at Adelaide and Queen Streets West.
