Transit agencies revise services
to colleges and universities, starting December 19



Exams are ending and classes are over until the new year, so many area transit agencies — especially GO Transit — decrease services to colleges and universities for the holidays. Starting this week, fewer buses operate along many of the routes that serve passengers traveling to and from post-secondary institutions. Most service resumes after New Year’s Day.


These transit agencies are decreasing services to colleges and universities: Brampton Transit; Durham Region Transit; GO Transit; Grand River Transit; Guelph Transit; the Hamilton Street Railway; MiWay; Niagara Falls Transit; Niagara-on-the-Lake Transit; Niagara Region Transit; Peterborough Transit; the St. Catharines Transit Commission; the Toronto Transit Commission; Welland Transit; and York Region Transit.

They’re decreasing services to: Brock University, Centennial College’s Morningside and Progress campuses, Conestoga College’s Cambridge, Doon and Waterloo campuses, Durham College’s North Oshawa and Whitby campuses, Fleming College’s Sutherland campus, Humber College’s Lakeshore and North campuses, McMaster University main Hamilton campus, Mohawk College’s Fennell campus, Niagara College’s Glendale and Woodlawn campuses, Redeemer University College, Sheridan College’s Davis and Trafalgar campuses, Trent University’s Oshawa and Symons campuses the University of Guelph’s main Guelph campus, the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) North Oshawa and Downtown Oshawa campuses, the University of Toronto’s Mississauga and Scarborough campuses, the University of Waterloo’s main Waterloo campus, Wilfrid Laurier University’s Waterloo campus and York University’s Keele campus.

Starting Monday, December 19, NRT cancels the last two trips along the route Mondays to Thursdays. The last bus leaves Dorchester / Morrison Hub in Niagara Falls at 8:05 p.m. Mondays to Saturdays. It leaves Brock Tower terminal on the Brock University campus at 8:31 p.m. It ends its trip in Downtown St. Catharines Terminal at 8:48 p.m.

Buses operate with Monday-to-Saturday holiday schedules to and from the campus throughout the holidays, except these days with no transit service:

It ends its trip in Brock Tower terminal on the Brock University campus in St. Catharines at 9:52 p.m. The last bus leaves Brock at 10:06 p.m., instead of 11:06 p.m. It ends its trip in Thorold at 10:26 p.m.

Holiday Monday-to-Friday service continues throughout the holidays, except this day with no transit service:

Since fewer passengers are travelling to and from the college, the TTC is decreasing the frequency of service along the route Mondays to Fridays from about 7 a.m. until 7 p.m., starting Tuesday, December 27.

It’s also canceling service along the 38A short-turn branch between U of T and Scarborough Centre Station during the holidays. By cancelling the 38A branch, the TTC also temporarily increases the frequency of service along the route east of U of T.

The TTC is also decreasing service along the route for passengers travelling to and from the University of Toronto’s Scarborough campus.

It’s also the last day this year that it operates the eastbound bus that usually leaves “Mac” at 7 p.m. Fridays. (The bus ends its trip in Erin Mills at 7:35 p.m.)

And, it’s also the last day this year that it operates the westbound buses that usually leave Erin Mills at 7:08, 7:30, 10:43 and 11:13 a.m. Mondays to Fridays. (The buses usually end their trips in “Mac” terminal at 7:48, 8:28, 11:18 and 11:48 p.m.)

(The TTC has not confirmed holiday service levels. This post describes how it decreased the frequency of service during the Christmas and New Year’s season in previous years.)

Since fewer passengers are travelling to and from the university, the TTC is operating fewer buses along the route to decrease the frequency of service Mondays to Fridays from about 7 a.m. until 7 p.m., starting Monday, December 19.

Friday, December 23 is the last day this year that YRT operates short-turn buses between York University and Richmond Hill Centre Terminal Mondays to Fridays from about 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. This results in less frequent service between the two points, with buses dropping off or picking up passengers every 16 minutes, instead of every 7½ minutes.
