Although MiWay is increasing some fares this Monday, January 30, most fares remain at 2016 rates, except for adult and senior tickets.
Also, starting Monday, May 1, the single fare for post-secondary students using their PRESTO increases to $3 from $2.85, the same rate as the adult fare, which aligns fares that neighbouring transit systems charge.
According to Patrick Phaneuf, the City of Mississauga’s acting transit director. “Transit growth depends on attracting new riders to the system. To do so, requires continued investment to increase service levels, frequency and to operate and maintain the Mississauga Transitway - the city’s east-west dedicated bus corridor.”
“MiWay understands the importance of providing affordable transit, while at the same time making modest fare changes to offset costs,” he said.
Starting Monday, the cost to buy ten adult tickets increases by $1 to $31. Buying five adult tickets sets your back an extra 50 cents, for a total of $15.50. Seniors pay $1 more, or $21, for ten tickets and 50 cents more, or $10.50, for five tickets.
The price of a GTA Weekly Pass jumped to $63 from $61 New Year’s Day, Sunday, January 1, when the TTC increased its fares.
Adult cash fares remain at the 2015 rate of $3.50. Child and youth fares remain the same. The City of Mississauga has frozen these fares at the 2009 rate. It’s also keeping rates of PRESTO fares for single adults ($3) and seniors ($2) at the same levels as last year. PRESTO monthly passes for adults ($130) and senior ($61) also stay at the same price.
The $1 senior cash fare continues in effect during off-peak hours, weekends and holidays until the results of the Mississauga’s affordable transportation pilot program are available this spring.
Mississauga City Council approved the MiWay fare increase as part of the City’s 2017 budget process during its meeting of Wednesday, December 14, 2016.
