TTC revises routes and services,
starting March 26

Update — Thursday, March 30, 5:49 p.m.: The TTC reversed the direction of the north-end loop of the 17A Birchmount route, starting today.

Update — Monday, March 27, 11:06 p.m.: Steve Munro advises that the City of Toronto has postponed sidewalk construction on Queen Street West west of Spadina Avenue until May. (The TTC plans to operate buses along the 501 Queen route then, so the TTC will not have to detour the cars.) Schedule changes along the 501 Queen and 510 Spadina route continue, however.

The TTC is making fairly minor changes to its services, starting Sunday, March 26.

In particular, it’s reorganizing the various branches of the 73 Royal York route, to operate extra rush-hour service further north along the route.

It’s also revising service levels along three streetcar routes to continue to provide a reliable service during upcoming construction projects (although it also cancelled one of those projects after it drew up the schedules for this service period.

The TTC continues to suspend service along this route due to Metrolinx construction of the Eglinton Crosstown light rail transit line:

Southbound buses start their trips on Oak Street Weston east of Weston Road, then proceed:

westward along Oak to Weston Road,
resuming the regular 73 route southward along Weston.

Southbound buses pick up passengers at a new stop (for this route):

  • on Oak Street Weston east of Weston Road. (Buses operating along the 59 Maple Leaf route also serve this stop.)

Northbound buses operate along the regular 73 route to Weston Road and Knob Hill Drive, then proceed:

east- and southward along Knob Hill; and then
westward along Oak Street Weston to just east of Weston Road,
ending their trips.

Northbound buses pick up passengers at a new stop (for this route):

Cancelling branches of routes

131F Nugget express

Friday, March 24 is the last day that the TTC operates buses along the 131F express branch of the route. Buses serving this branch operated only between Scarborough Centre and Kennedy Stations and dropped off or picked up passengers only at express stops.

According to the TTC, few passengers rode the buses operating along this branch of the route.

The TTC introduced service along this branch Tuesday, September 6, 2016](/archives/weblog/2016/09/03-ttc_revise.shtml#t131introbr), while it continued its program of rehabilitating the cars that operate along the 3 Scarborough rapid transit line. It temporarily withdrew some cars from service to complete the work.

By removing cars from service, the TTC had fewer trains available to operate along the line. It maintained slightly less frequent service levels along the line during rush hours.

To provide alternate service for passengers, the TTC introduced this new extra express branch of the route.

Express buses serving the 131E branch of the route continue operate express between Scarborough Centre and Kennedy stations Mondays to Fridays during rush hours. Buses serving the 131E branch drop off or pick up passengers at all local stops between Old Finch Avenue and Scarborough Centre.

The TTC is also decreasing the frequency of service along the route south of Scarborough Centre.

73 Royal York

73A branch

Friday, March 24 is the last day that the TTC operates buses along the branch between Dixon Road and Royal York Station. Starting Monday, March 27, it introduces the new 73D branch of the route of the route, increasing the frequency of service between Oak Street Weston and Dixon Road Mondays to Fridays during rush hours.

After Friday, TTC buses operating along route 73 no longer drop off or pick up passengers at these stops:

  • on Dixon Road east of Royal York Road and at Roxaline Street (buses operating along the 52 Lawrence West route continue to serve these stops after March 24) and
  • on Roxaline Street at Royaleigh Drive (no TTC buses serve this stop after March 24).

TTC buses have operated along Roxaline Street and Royaleigh Drive since July 26, 1965.

The TTC is also decreasing the frequency of service along other parts of the route.

501 Queen

(Update — Monday, March 27, 11:06 p.m.: The City has postponed the construction project. However, schedule changes continue.)

The TTC is increasing the running time — the time it schedules for drivers to complete a round trip along the route — to maintain service reliability during upcoming construction. (The TTC plans to detour the cars while the City of Toronto rebuilds the sidewalks west of Spadina Avenue.)

By increasing the running time, the TTC also increases and decreases the frequency of service along the route at various times of the week.

Due to another construction project on The Queensway, Lake Shore Boulevard West and in Humber Loop, all cars operate only between Sunnyside and Neville Park loops.)

Starting Sunday, March 26, streetcars drop off or pick up passengers at all stops along the route east of Sunnyside:

  • every 7 minutes 40 seconds, instead of every 8 minutes, Sundays and holidays from about 8 a.m. until noon.

Starting Saturday, April 1, the cars serve passengers at stops:

  • every 6 minutes 20 seconds, instead of every 6½ minutes, Saturdays from about 8 a.m. until noon.
73 Royal York

The TTC is extending extra rush-hour service further north along the route, so that buses short-turn at Oak Street West, instead of Dixon Road. It’s cancelling the current 73A branch (Dixon - Royal York Station) and introducing the new 73D branch (Oak and Knob Hill - Royal York Station) of the route.

By reorganizing the branches of the route, the TTC increases the frequency of rush-hour service between Oak and Dixon Mondays to Fridays during rush hours.

Starting Monday, March 27, buses drop off or pick up passengers between Oak and Dixon:

  • every 8 minutes, instead of every 15 minutes, during morning rush hours; and

  • every 7 minutes, instead of every 8 minutes 15 seconds, from about noon until 7 p.m.; and
  • every 9 minutes, instead of every 10 minutes, from about 7 until 10 p.m.

Decreasing the frequency of service along routes

506 Carlton

The TTC is increasing the running time — the time it schedules for drivers to complete a round trip along the route. Originally, it intended to revise the schedules in this way to maintain service reliability during an upcoming project to install new overhead wiring on Gerrard Street East. However, it postponed the project due to a shortage of buses to replace the cars - but, unfortunately, not until after TTC planning staff had already scheduled drivers and streetcars for this service period.

By increasing the running time, the TTC also decreases the frequency of service along the route at various times of the week.

Starting Sunday, March 26, streetcars drop off or pick up passengers at stops along the route:

  • every 8 minutes 15 seconds, instead of every 8 minutes, Sundays and holidays from about noon until 7 p.m.

Starting Monday, March 27, the cars serve passengers at stops along the route:

  • every 5 minutes, instead of every 4 minutes 20 seconds, Mondays to Fridays during morning rush hours;
  • every 6 minutes 10 seconds, instead of every 5½ minutes, from about 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.;
  • every 6 minutes 15 seconds, instead of every 5½ minutes, during afternoon rush hours;
  • every 8½ minutes, instead of every 7½ minutes, from about 7 until 10 p.m.; and
  • every 9 minutes 45 seconds, instead of every 8½ minutes after about 10 p.m.

Starting Saturday, April 6, the cars serve passengers at stops:

  • every 8 minutes 45 seconds, instead of every 7½ minutes, Saturdays before about noon; and
  • every 10 minutes, instead of every 9½ minutes, after about 10 p.m.

Streetcars resume their regular schedules Sunday, May 7.

505 Dundas

The TTC is increasing the running time — the time it schedules for drivers to complete a round trip along the route — to maintain service reliability during upcoming construction. (The TTC plans to detour the cars while the City of Toronto rebuilds the water-mains on Dundas Street East between Church and Yonge Streets and the TTC rebuilds its tracks on Dundas East at Victoria Street.)

By increasing the running time, the TTC also decreases the frequency of service along the route at various times of the week.

Starting Sunday, March 26, streetcars drop off or pick up passengers at stops along the route:

  • every 11 minutes, instead of every 10 minutes, Sundays and holidays before about 8 a.m.;
  • every 6½ minutes, instead of every 6 minutes, from about noon until 7 p.m.; and
  • every 11 minutes, instead of every 10 minutes, after about 7 p.m.

Starting Monday, March 27, the cars serve passengers at stops along the route:

  • every 6½ minutes, instead of every 5 minutes 50 seconds, Mondays to Fridays during morning rush hours;
  • every 6 minutes 50 seconds, instead of every 6 minutes 15 seconds, from about 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.;
  • every 7 minutes, instead of every 6 minutes 20 seconds, during afternoon rush hours;
  • every 8½ minutes, instead of every 7 minutes 40 seconds, from about 7 until 10 p.m.; and
  • every 11 minutes, instead of every 10 minutes, after about 10 p.m.

Starting Saturday, April 6, the cars serve passengers at stops:

  • every 7 minutes 10 seconds, instead of every 7 minutes, Saturdays from about 8 a.m. until noon; and
  • every 11 minutes, instead of every 10 minutes, after about 10 p.m.

By decreasing the frequency of service early Sunday-and-holiday mornings, the TTC effectively removes 505 Dundas from its “ten-minutes-or-better” network of routes. (Passengers intending to travel along one of those routes can expect a bus or streetcar to arrive at their stop every ten minutes or less at all times of the week, except overnight.)

121 Fort York - Esplanade

The TTC is extending the path for the west end of the route so that buses start and end their trips in Princes’ Gate Loop.

It’s also increasing the running time — the time it schedules for drivers to complete a round trip along the route — to accommodate the slightly longer path. By increasing the running time, it also decreases the frequency of service along the route at various times of the week.

Starting Sunday, March 26, buses drop off or pick up passengers at stops along the route:

  • every 17 minutes, instead of every 15 minutes, Sundays and holidays before about noon.

Starting Monday, March 27, the buses serve passengers at stops:

73 Royal York

The TTC is providing extra rush-hour service further north along the route, so that buses short-turn at Oak Street West, instead of Dixon Road. It’s cancelling the current 73A branch (Dixon - Royal York Station) and introducing the new 73D branch (Oak and Knob Hill - Royal York Station) of the route.

By reorganizing the branches of the route, the TTC increases the frequency of rush-hour service between Oak and Dixon Mondays to Fridays during rush hours and decreases the frequency along other parts of the route.

Starting Monday, March 27, buses drop off or pick up passengers at stops north of Oak:

  • every 16 minutes, instead of every 15 minutes, during morning rush hours; and

And, the buses serve passengers south of Eglinton West:

  • every 6 minutes 19 seconds, instead of every 6 minutes, during morning rush hours; and
  • 8 minutes 35 seconds, instead of every 7½ minutes, during afternoon rush hours.
510 Spadina

(Update — Monday, March 27, 11:06 p.m.: The City has postponed the construction project. However, schedule changes continue.)

The TTC is increasing the running time — the time it schedules for drivers to complete a round trip along the route — to maintain service reliability during upcoming construction. (The TTC plans to detour streetcars operating along the 501 Queen route along Spadina Avenue while the City of Toronto rebuilds the sidewalks west of Spadina Avenue. A similar detour in 2016 resulted in less reliable service along the 510 Spadina route due to the large number of streetcars on Spadina Avenue between Queen and King Streets West.)

By increasing the running time, the TTC also decreases the frequency of service along the route at various times of the week.

Starting Sunday, March 26, streetcars drop off or pick up passengers at stops north of Spadina / Queens Quay Loop:

  • every 4 minutes 23 seconds, instead of every 4 minutes 8 seconds, Sundays and holidays from about noon until 7 p.m.

Revising the paths for buses operating along routes

17A Birchmount

Starting Thursday, March 30, the TTC reverses the direction of the loop at the north end of the route.

Southbound buses start their trips on Rougeside Promenade west of Birchmount Road, then proceed:

westward along Rougeside;
northward along Uptown Drive;
eastward along Highway 7; and then
southward along Birchmount to Rougeside,
resuming their usual route southward along Birchmount.

Southbound buses no longer drop off or pick up passengers at a stop

  • on Uptown Drive at Rougemount Promenade.

Instead, southbound buses serve new stops

  • on Rougemount Promenade west of Birchmount Road and
  • on Highway 7 at Birchmount Road.

Northbound buses operate along their usual route to Birchmount Road and Rougeside Promenade, then proceed:

westward along Rougeside to just west of Birchmount,
ending their trips.

Northbound buses no longer drop off or pick up passengers at stops

  • on Birchmount Road south of Rougeside Promenade and Highway 7 and
  • on Uptown Drive at Rougeside Promenade.

Instead, northbound buses serve a new stop

  • on Rougeside Promenade west of Birchmount Road.

Adjusting the schedules for buses operating along a route

66 Prince Edward

66A branch

The TTC is adjusting the trip times for buses operating along the branch between Old Mill Station and Humber Loop from about 7:45 until 8 a.m. Mondays to Fridays. By adjusting the times, it’s more evenly spacing the time between each trip.

Starting Monday, March 27, the northbound bus that usually leaves Humber Loop at 7:47 a.m. on a special school trip leaves, instead, two minutes earlier at 7:45 a.m. The TTC no longer operates the northbound bus that usually left the loop at 8 a.m.
