Around the Bay 30k Road Race

The Cities of Burlington and Hamilton are closing various streets Sunday to accommodate the 123rd annual road race — the longest-running annual event of its kind in North America — supporting the St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton Foundation.

Burlington Transit and the Hamilton Street Railway are revising service during the event. Race participants follow a course that starts and ends in downtown Hamilton, but also stretches to the east end of lower Hamilton and into Burlington, so detours are extensive.

The City of Burlington is closing

• southbound lane of King Road between North Shore Boulevard East and Plains Road East,
• eastbound lane of North Shore Boulevards East and West between the QEW exit ramp west of Joseph Brant Hospital and Plains Road West,
• Toronto-bound exit ramp to North Shore Boulevard East from the Queen Elizabeth Way,
• Niagara-bound entry ramp to the Queen Elizabeth Way from North Shore Boulevard East
• Plains Road West at York Boulevard and
• eastbound curb lane of Plains Road West between York Boulevard and North Shore Boulevard West

from 9:30 a.m. until about 2 p.m. Sunday. The City is reopening the streets after the last race participant clears the area.

The City of Hamilton is closing

From 6 a.m. until 4 p.m. Sunday, March 26, passengers should expect delays as race participants pass along Plains Road West between North Shore Boulevard West and York Boulevard.

Burlington-bound buses start their trips on King Street East at James Street North in downtown Hamilton, then proceed:

westward along King Street West;
north- and eastward along Highway 403;
northward along Highway 6;
eastward along Old York Road; and then
southward along Plains Road West to York Boulevard,
resuming their regular route, eastward along Plains West.

Buses operating toward Burlington skip their regular stops

• on Bay Street North at Vine Street,

4 Bayfront

The race may delay the inbound bus that the HSR has scheduled to arrive at Burlington Street East and James Street North at 9:48 a.m. Sunday, March 26. Hamilton Police Service officers will help direct the bus through the intersection once all runners have passed through, likely by 10 a.m. at the latest.

All other inbound buses operate along their regular route and schedule.

From 5:30 until 9 a.m. and from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m., outbound buses operate along their regular route to Bay Street South and Main Street West, then detour:

eastward along Main Streets West and East;
northward along John Streets South and North; and then
westward along Wilson Street and York Boulevard to MacNab Street North,
